ABSTRACT Marine aquaculture is expanding globally, yet its interactions with surrounding ecosystems remain complex and insufficiently understood. This study reviews the fluxes of energy and nutrients from three major aquaculture systems: finfish cages, suspended bivalves, and seaweed farms and considers their implications for ecosystem functioning and ...

Molecular identification of the tropical seagrass Halophila stipulacea from Turkey
Halophila stipulacea (Forsskål) Ascherson, a tropical seagrass, is thought to be a Lessepsian immigrant that entered the Mediterranean Sea from the Red Sea after the opening of the Suez Canal (1869). Up to date, no genetic studies of H. stipulacea from Turkey are available. In order to verify the molecular identity of Turkish isolates of H, stipulacea,

Seagrass Sampling Methods in a Community‐Based Setting, A Comparative Analysis
ABSTRACT Effective monitoring of seagrass is essential for the conservation of this critical marine ecosystem. The choice of monitoring method depends on balancing accuracy, efficiency, cost and accessibility, especially in contexts requiring community engagement and ownership.

A survey of phytomyxid parasites in seagrasses of the genus Halophila reveals previously unrecognised diversity and a widespread presence of Marinomyxa within Halophila meadows, supporting a tight co‐evolutionary relationship between the two genera. ABSTRACT Marinomyxa is a genus of obligate intracellular parasitic protists known to infect tropical ...

Plant diversity estimates of Mediterranean islands differ among biodiversity databases
Large‐scale biodiversity databases encompass three main types of data for plants, namely single species point occurrences, co‐occurrences in vegetation plots, and checklists for specific areas. Evidence shows that such data types exhibit specific biases, reporting different species assemblages at local scales.

Abstract Seagrasses are important foundation species, which support coastal biodiversity and provide socioeconomic benefits. However, seagrasses are threatened by anthropogenic changes, including the elevated temperature associated with marine heatwaves (MHWs) and light limitation from eutrophication or increased sedimentation.

Seagrass beds provide essential habitat for many fish species. This study utilized over a decade (2009 to 2022) of annual seagrass monitoring data to investigate trends in seagrass composition with the introduction of the non-native species, Halophila ...

Abstract Nitrogen fixers can enhance nitrogen availability for seagrass communities that may be nitrogen limited. However, the role of epiphytic diazotrophs, particularly cyanobacteria, in seagrass communities is not well understood. We measured nitrogen fixation rates, epiphyte biomass, and relative abundances of epiphytic diazotrophs on the leaves of

ABSTRACT Biological invasions are one of the major drivers of biodiversity decline and have been shown to have far‐reaching consequences for society and the economy. Preventing the introduction and spread of alien species represents the most effective solution to reducing their impacts on nature and human well‐being.

Global Patterns and Drivers of Seagrass Biomass, Net Primary Production and Meadow Structure
ABSTRACT Aim We decipher global patterns in seagrass growth and structure to advance seagrass science, facilitate multidisciplinary research, and promote effective management strategies and policy development for seagrass habitats. Location: Global. Time period: 1975 to 2024. Major taxa studied: Seagrasses—marine angiosperms.
