Halophiles

2022
Halophiles are extremophilic salt-loving microorganisms that can survive in an extremely high level of salinity (10-30% NaCl). They belong to all three groups (i.e., bacteria, archaea, and eukaryotes). Halophiles tolerate high salt concentration due to unique cellular adaptations like salt-in strategy, compatible solute strategy, and enzyme adaptations.

Halotolerant and halophilic fungi

Mycological Research, 2009
Extreme environments have for long been considered to be populated almost exclusively by prokaryotic organisms and therefore monopolized by bacteriologists. Solar salterns are natural hypersaline environments characterized by extreme concentrations of NaCl, often high concentrations of other ions, high uv irradiation and in some cases extremes in pH ...

Proteomics of Halophilic archaea

Journal of Chromatography B, 2005
Halophilic archaea is a member of the Halobacteriacea family, the only family in the Halobacteriales order. Most Halophilic archaea require 1.5M NaCl both to grow and retain the structural integrity of the cells. The proteins of these organisms have thus been adapted to be active and stable in the hypersaline condition.

Halophilic adaptation of enzymes

Extremophiles, 2000
It is now clear that the understanding of halophilic adaptation at a molecular level requires a strategy of complementary experiments, combining molecular biology, biochemistry, and cellular approaches with physical chemistry and thermodynamics. In this review, after a discussion of the definition and composition of halophilic enzymes, the effects of ...

Thermophilic and halophilic extremophiles

Current Opinion in Microbiology, 1999
The microbiology of extremely hot or saline habitats is a fast moving field with many new successes in the enrichment and isolation of new organisms and in an understanding of molecular factors that impart stability on thermostable and halophilic biomolecules.

Halophilic Vibrio Sepsis

Southern Medical Journal, 1980
We have described a patient with fulminant sepsis and bullous skin lesions due to L + Vibrio. The histologic features of these lesions as well as the rapid onset of refractory shock and complete heart block at least suggest that potent bacterial toxins are involved in the pathogenesis of disease caused by this "unnamed lactose-positive marine Vibrio."

Perchlorate and halophilic prokaryotes: implications for possible halophilic life on Mars

Extremophiles, 2013
In view of the finding of perchlorate among the salts detected by the Phoenix Lander on Mars, we investigated the relationships of halophilic heterotrophic microorganisms (archaea of the family Halobacteriaceae and the bacterium Halomonas elongata) toward perchlorate. All strains tested grew well in NaCl-based media containing 0.4 M perchlorate, but at
