The phylogeny of unicellular, extremely halotolerant cyanobacteria

Archives of Microbiology, 1998
We examined the morphology, physiology, and 16S rRNA gene sequences of three culture collection strains and of ten novel isolates of unicellular cyanobacteria from hypersaline environments. The strains were morphologically diverse, with average cell widths ranging from 2.8 to 10.3 micron. There were single-celled, colonial, and baeocyte-forming strains.

Halotolerance of the yeast Arxula adeninivorans LS3

Antonie van Leeuwenhoek, 2000
The non-pathogenic, dimorphic, ascomycetous yeast Arxula adeninivorans LS3 is halotolerant. It can grow in a minimal medium containing up to 20% NaCl. The growth parameters are only weakly influenced by 10% NaCl. However, NaCl in a concentration higher than 10% causes a decrease in the specific growth rate, a longer adaptation phase and a lower cell ...

Gıda Tuzlarında Halotolerant Bakterilerin İncelenmesi

2021
Twenty-five food salts, collected from seven-country, were examined for moisture contents and ash contents, pH values, total numbers of bacteria, and total numbers of bacteria halotolerant bacteria. The growth and biochemical reactions of halotolerant bacteria at different NaCl concentrations, pH, and temperature values were investigated.

Potential of halotolerant and halophilic microorganisms for biotechnology

Extremophiles, 2001
Halotolerant or halophilic microorganisms, able to live in saline environments, offer a multitude of actual or potential applications in various fields of biotechnology. The technical applications of bacteriorhodopsin comprise holography, spatial light modulators, optical computing, and optical memories.

Halotolerance Genes in Yeast

2002
Yeast molecular genetics has unraveled some novel aspects which may be relevant to plant tolerance to salt stress. The plasma membrane electrical potential drives the uptake of toxic cations such as sodium. This biophysical parameter is modulated by several protein kinases acting on the proton pumping ATPase and on the potassium transporter.

Halotolerant Yeasts: Biodiversity and Potential Application

Mikrobiolohichnyi Zhurnal, 2020
Halotolerant yeasts represent a heterogeneous group of unicellular fungi able to survive and thrive under hypersaline conditions. This review examines the biodiversity of halotolerant yeasts in various habitats with high salt content and the potential practical applications of this group of microorganisms in industry and agriculture.

The osmotic components of halotolerant algae

Trends in Biochemical Sciences, 1986
Abstract Halotolerant algae of the genus Dunaliella , which can grow in media containing 0.1–5.5 m NaCl, osmoregulate mostly by accumulating intracellularly a single compatible solute, glycerol. An improved technique has made it possible to measure accurately intracellular Na + and K + concentrations in algae grown in media with a high ...

Biodiversity of Halophilic and Halotolerant Actinobacteria

2015
The halophiles possess interesting biotechnological capabilities which increase the importance of their exploitation for commercial purposes. The halophilic microorganisms are highly diverse and among those organisms the halophilic actinobacterial group is of special interest for their secondary metabolites.

Halophilic and Halotolerant Non-phototrophic Eubacteria

1989
Halophilic, heterotrophic eubacteria share in common their general cell organization, but show many differences in modes of metabolism, salinity tolerances, and ranges of environmental conditions that permit growth. While numerous eubacteria have been isolated from hypersaline environments, relatively little is known about their activities and roles in
