Halotolerance Genes in Yeast

2002
Yeast molecular genetics has unraveled some novel aspects which may be relevant to plant tolerance to salt stress. The plasma membrane electrical potential drives the uptake of toxic cations such as sodium. This biophysical parameter is modulated by several protein kinases acting on the proton pumping ATPase and on the potassium transporter.

The uptake and extrusion of salts by the halotolerant bacterium, Ba1

Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics, 1982
Abstract Ion fluxes were studied in the cells of the moderately halophilic, halotolerant bacterium, Ba 1 . K + and Rb + ions rapidly penetrated the cell membrane in contrast to Na + and Li + ions which were found to be nearly nonpenetrant. Moreover, Na + ions at millimolar concentrations inhibited the passive penetration of K + and Rb + into ...

The halotolerant fungus Glomerobolus gelineus is a member of the Ostropales

Mycological Research, 2006
Glomerobolus gelineus is a halotolerant species with a unique method of ballistic propagation. The absence of both sexual and asexual spores made reliable placement of this species, based on morphology alone, within the current fungal classification problematical.

The osmotic components of halotolerant algae

Trends in Biochemical Sciences, 1986
Abstract Halotolerant algae of the genus Dunaliella , which can grow in media containing 0.1–5.5 m NaCl, osmoregulate mostly by accumulating intracellularly a single compatible solute, glycerol. An improved technique has made it possible to measure accurately intracellular Na + and K + concentrations in algae grown in media with a high ...

Genes and Enzymes of Ectoine Biosynthesis in Halotolerant Methanotrophs

2011
Ectoine (1,4,5,6-tetrahydro-2-methyl-4-pyrimidine carboxylic acid) is a widely distributed compatible solute accumulated by halophilic and halotolerant microorganisms to prevent osmotic stress in highly saline environments. Ectoine as a highly water keeping compound stabilizing biomolecules and whole cells can be used in scientific work, cosmetics, and
