De Novo Transcriptome Assembly and Analysis of the Flat Oyster Pathogenic Protozoa Bonamia Ostreae [PDF]

open access: yesFrontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology, 2022
The flat oyster Ostrea edulis is an oyster species native to Europe. It has declined to functional extinction in many areas of the NE Atlantic for several decades.

First characterization of the parasite Haplosporidium costale in France and development of a real-time PCR assay for its rapid detection in the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas. [PDF]

open access: yesTransbound Emerg Dis, 2022
Abstract The Pacific cupped oyster Crassostrea gigas is one of the most ‘globalized’ marine invertebrates and its production is predominant in many parts of the world including Europe. However, it is threatened by mortality events associated with pathogenic microorganisms such as the virus OsHV‐1 and the bacteria Vibrio aestuarianus. C. gigas is also a

An eDNA/eRNA-based approach to investigate the life cycle of non-cultivable shellfish micro-parasites: the case of Bonamia ostreae, a parasite of the European flat oyster Ostrea edulis. [PDF]

open access: yesMicrob Biotechnol, 2020
An eDNA/eRNA approach was developed, allowing detecting and quantifying Bonamia ostreae 18S rDNA/rRNA as well as monitoring its presence in seawater by real‐time PCR. B. ostreae DNA and RNA could be detected up to 4 and 30 days respectively, suggesting a higher sensitivity of the eRNA based tool.

Freshwater Haplosporidian Diversity Associated With Invasive Non-Native Bivalves in the River Thames, Including Haplosporidium raabei Infecting Dreissena polymorpha. [PDF]

open access: yesJ Eukaryot Microbiol
ABSTRACT Haplosporidians are protistan parasites of aquatic invertebrates. Described here is the first report of the zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) parasite Haplosporidium raabei in the River Thames, London, UK. The prevalence of this protist in the upper tidal Thames, Richmond, was higher than previously reported in other studies from the UK and ...

Comparative genomics of Ascetosporea gives new insight into the evolutionary basis for animal parasitism in Rhizaria [PDF]

open access: yesBMC Biology
Background Ascetosporea (Endomyxa, Rhizaria) is a group of unicellular parasites infecting aquatic invertebrates. They are increasingly being recognized as widespread and important in marine environments, causing large annual losses in invertebrate ...

Revisions to the Classification, Nomenclature, and Diversity of Eukaryotes. [PDF]

open access: yesJ Eukaryot Microbiol, 2019
Abstract This revision of the classification of eukaryotes follows that of Adl et al., 2012 [J. Euk. Microbiol. 59(5)] and retains an emphasis on protists. Changes since have improved the resolution of many nodes in phylogenetic analyses. For some clades even families are being clearly resolved.

S.O.S. Pinna nobilis: A Mass Mortality Event in Western Mediterranean Sea

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2017
A mass mortality event (MME) impacting the bivalve Pinna nobilis was detected across a wide geographical area of the Spanish Mediterranean Sea (Western Mediterranean Sea) in early autumn 2016.

Infection dynamics, spatial distribution and diversity of the oyster parasite Haplosporidium costale along French coasts

open access: yesAquaculture Reports
Oyster farming is one of the major aquaculture productions worldwide. Among pathogens hampering its development, some Haplosoporidium species are associated with oyster mortality events. Initially characterized in the Eastern oyster Crassostrea virginica

Dead or Alive? Challenges in Discriminating Dietary From Host‐Associated Community via RNA and DNA Metabarcoding in a Filter Feeder

open access: yesEnvironmental DNA, Volume 7, Issue 5, September–October 2025.
The present manuscript uses time series of highly standardized samples of a freshwater and a marine mussel from Germany to explore chances and challenges of identifying their associated community composition by a parallel DNA and RNA metabarcoding approach.

A sedimentary DNA record of the Atacama Trench reveals biodiversity changes in the most productive marine ecosystem

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology, Volume 30, Issue 7, July 2024.
Using DNA deposited in deep‐sea sediments, we examine how marine biodiversity has changed over the last 150 years in Chilean waters. We find a unique period aligning with high fishing and extreme climatic events that reduces overall diversity. Furthermore, we find an effect of sea surface temperature and El Nino events over diversity, providing an idea
