In Situ Photopolymerization of Smectic B Liquid‐Crystalline Electrolytes from Mesogenic Phosphate–Diacrylate/Ionic Liquid Complexes for High‐Performance Soft Ionic Actuators

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
A flexible liquid‐crystalline electrolyte membrane via in situ photopolymerization of a phosphate‐functionalized mesogen, ionic liquid, and diacrylate monomer is developed. The resulting smectic B (SmB)‐phase structure enables 2D ion transport with high conductivity (10−4 S cm−1).

UTact: Underwater Vision‐Based Tactile Sensor with Geometry Reconstruction and Contact Force Estimation

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
Embedded flexible sensing technologies advance underwater soft robotics, yet most systems still suffer from hysteresis and limited perceptiveness. Instead, vision‐based tactile sensors provide reliable and rapid feedback essential for complex underwater tasks.

Haptic dancing: human performance at haptic decoding with a vocabulary [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
The inspiration for this study is the observation that swing dancing involves coordination of actions between two humans that can be accomplished by pure haptic signaling. This study implements a leader-follower dance to be executed between a human and a

Degradable Magnetic Composites from Recycled NdFeB Magnets for Soft Actuation and Sensing

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
This work presents a degradable soft magnetic composite made from recycled NdFeB particles embedded in a gelatin‐based organogel. The material is processed into magnetic sensors and soft robotic components, which can later be dissolved in a green solvent to recover NdFeB magnetic particles.

Pseudo-haptics Interfaces for Robotic Teleoperation

open access: yesCompanion of the 2024 ACM/IEEE International Conference on Human-Robot Interaction
When remotely operating robotic systems, the situation awareness and the absence of the possibility of direct human touch in such a remote environment constitute major challenges in telerobotics. Haptic feedback has been playing an important role when people interact with remote environments (e.g., in robotic teleoperation) or provide more immersive ...

TacScope: A Miniaturized Vision‐Based Tactile Sensor for Surgical Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
TacScope is a compact, vision‐based tactile sensor designed for robot‐assisted surgery. By leveraging a curved elastomer surface with pressure‐sensitive particle redistribution, it captures high‐resolution 3D tactile feedback. TacScope enables accurate tumor detection and shape classification beneath soft tissue phantoms, offering a scalable, low‐cost ...

Continual Learning for Multimodal Data Fusion of a Soft Gripper

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
Models trained on a single data modality often struggle to generalize when exposed to a different modality. This work introduces a continual learning algorithm capable of incrementally learning different data modalities by leveraging both class‐incremental and domain‐incremental learning scenarios in an artificial environment where labeled data is ...

Auditory–Tactile Congruence for Synthesis of Adaptive Pain Expressions in RoboPatients

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
In this work, we explore auditory–tactile congruence for synthesizing adaptive vocal pain expressions in robopatients. Using a robopatient platform that integrates vocal pain sounds with palpation forces, we conducted 7680 trials across 20 participants.

Interference haptic stimulation and consistent quantitative tactility in transparent electrotactile screen with pressure-sensitive transistors

open access: yesNature Communications
Integrating tactile feedback through haptic interfaces enhances experiences in virtual and augmented reality. However, electrotactile systems, which stimulate mechanoreceptors directly, often yield inconsistent tactile results due to variations in ...
