Assessing grey seal (Halichoerus grypus) diet in western Scotland [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Grey seal diet was last comprehensively studied in western Scotland in 1985. Since then, the grey seal population has increased by approximately 30% and relative abundance of fish stocks in the area has changed markedly.

Targeted Restoration of the Microbial Tryptophan Oxidative Pathway Ameliorates Autism‐Like Behavioral and Synaptic Deficits

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is associated with gut microbiota dysbiosis, yet the contribution of specific microbial metabolic pathways remains unclear. Reanalysis of a public ASD cohort revealed reduced functional potential in microbial tryptophan oxidative metabolism.

Plaid‐Like Spin Splitting and Chirality of Magnon Bands in Antiferromagnetic MnTe2

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Helicity‐ and angle‐resolved Raman spectroscopy reveals chiral magnons in the non‐coplanar antiferromagnet MnTe 2. Combined with first‐principles calculations and spin‐wave theory, the results establish its altermagnetic character through circular Raman dichroism, reduced rotational symmetry, and a distinctive plaid‐like momentum‐space magnon spin ...

Causes of Mortality in a Harbor Seal (Phoca vitulina) Population at Equilibrium

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2020
The harbor seal (Phoca vitulina richardii) population in the Salish Sea has been at equilibrium since the mid-1990s. This stable population of marine mammals resides relatively close to shore near a large human population and offers a novel opportunity ...

Trafficking Deficiency of TMEM175 Variants in Parkinson's Disease Pathogenesis and the Prospects of Precision Medicine

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study identifies that the PD‐associated TMEM175‐L156P variant disrupts lysosomal ion channel trafficking by causing aberrant endoplasmic reticulum retention. A “chaperone–agonist” bifunctional small molecule restores TMEM175‐L156P lysosomal localization and channel function, thereby alleviating PD‐relevant cellular phenotypes and highlighting a ...

Occurrence of 80 per and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) in muscle and liver tissues of marine mammals of the St. Lawrence Estuary and Gulf, Quebec, Canada

open access: yesFrontiers in Environmental Chemistry
Limited data are available for the occurrence of more recent per and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) in marine mammals, especially from the St. Lawrence Estuary and Gulf.

Soft, Multi‐Wavelength Photoplethysmography Enables Reliable Neonatal Blood Pressure Monitoring Via Error Stratification

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A soft hybrid multi‐wavelength PPG wearable acquires neonatal signals. Synchronized PPG and invasive ABP data are segmented into fixed windows. A 1D‐EfficientNet model predicts segment‐level SBP and DBP. Model performance is examined with retrospective subgroup analysis across acquisition conditions.

The pathology and occurrence of pathogens in Scottish grey seals (Halichoerus grypus). [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Neonatal mortality in grey seals on the Isle of May breeding colony and in a rehabilitation centre were investigated by detailed systematic post-mortem examinations (n=59), on-site bacteriology and advanced molecular diagnostic techniques for specific ...

Optokinetic nystagmus in harbor seals (Phoca vitulina)

open access: yesVision Research, 2008
Harbor seals experience motion due to self-motion and to movement in the external world. However, motion vision has not been studied yet in marine mammals moving in the underwater world. To open up this research, optokinetic nystagmus (OKN) as a basic motion sensing and retinal image stabilizing reflex was studied in four harbor seals during ...

The Natural Product Corramycin Acts as a DNA Gyrase Poison and Overcomes Fluoroquinolone Resistance in Mycobacterium tuberculosis

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Corramycin, a myxobacterial natural product antibiotic, exhibits potent bactericidal activity against multidrug‐resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The compound hijacks bacterial transporters such as BacA and OppABCD to enter the cell and inhibits DNA synthesis through a previously unrecognized mode of DNA gyrase poisoning, locking the enzyme in an ...
