Hard Mode Spectroscopy of Phase Transitions
Reviews in Mineralogy and Geochemistry, 2000Phonon spectra respond, in principle, to any change of the crystal structure or lattice imperfections of a material. Traditionally optical soft modes, which can show relatively large variations, have been widely used for the analysis of displacive phase transitions.

Chiral Mode Transformer for Hard Surface Waveguides
29th European Microwave Conference, 1999, 1999Fields in axially balanced corrugated cylindrical waveguide, also called hard surface waveguide, which is filled with chiral medium are considered. The eigenfields inside the chiral hard surface waveguide are circularly polarised fields. In a nonchiral hard surface waveguide these eigenmodes are propagating with the same propagation factor.

Mode-filtering characteristics of hard-polymer cladding fiber
Journal of Lightwave Technology, 2004Bandwidth improvement due to the mode-filtering effect caused by mode-dependent loss mechanism in a hard-polymer cladding fiber was investigated experimentally as well as numerically. We believe this principle can be applied to silica and plastic multimode fibers.

Discrete relaxation modes for a hard-sphere gas
Canadian Journal of Physics, 1968The discrete spectrum of a linearized Boltzmann equation for a hard-sphere gas is studied, and the results of Kuščer and Williams (1967) for a spherically symmetric state are rederived by a more elementary method. Extension is made to nonisotropic states, and it is shown that the discrete spectrum is empty for [Formula: see text].

Adaptive resonant mode compensation for hard disk drives
IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics, 2006This paper is concerned with a mechanical resonant mode compensation problem for hard disk drives. Conventional notch filters must have deep and wide enough frequency characteristics in order to accommodate all possible resonant mode characteristic perturbations, which result in deterioration in positioning accuracy and residual vibration after seeking.

Glass transition in colloidal hard spheres: Mode-coupling theory analysis
Physical Review Letters, 1993Coherent intermediate scattering functions are measured by dynamic light scattering for several wave vectors around the structure factor peak on metastable colloidal fluids and glasses of hard spherical particles. The results are quantitatively described by a combination of the \ensuremath{\alpha} and \ensuremath{\beta} processes.

Head-positioning control using resonant modes in hard disk drives
The 8th IEEE International Workshop on Advanced Motion Control, 2004. AMC '04., 2004The best way to enhance the input/output (I/O) performance of a hard disk drive is by increasing the spindle speed. Therefore, the effect of windage vibrations caused by the airflow increases as the spindle speed increases. The servo bandwidth is limited by the primary resonant frequency of the mechanical system. However, the frequencies of the windage

Several examples are presented and discussed, where it is shown that the faintness indices of ferroic phases with respect to hard vibrational modes having different transformation properties than soft modes can take on finite values even when both the soft and hard modes are of nonzero wavenumber.

Time-Dependent Ginzburg-Landau Equations for Hard-Mode Instabilities
Journal of the Physical Society of Japan, 1981An equation for self-oscillations with small amplitudes near hard-mode instabilities is derived by means of a reductive perturbation approach. The present equation can be used to discuss both normally and invertedly bifurcating cases, bacause the present equation is equivalent to each set of equations resulting from reductive perturbations up to the ...
