Comparative evaluation of funnel, box, and camera traps for reptile and amphibian inventory

open access: yesWildlife Society Bulletin, EarlyView.
We used data from 5 herpetological inventories conducted in Florida to evaluate the relative efficacy of funnel, box, and motion‐triggered camera traps for detecting reptile and amphibian species along drift‐fence arrays. Our results suggest that a hybrid array design (funnel traps + central camera trap) is best suited for general herpetofaunal ...

Wild pigs (Sus scrofa) prefer inoculated peanuts over whole‐kernel corn in cafeteria‐style study

open access: yesWildlife Society Bulletin, EarlyView.
In this study, we explored bait preference of wild pigs (Sus scrofa), a highly invasive species where primary removal efforts include the use of bait and corral‐style trapping. In addition, we investigated preferences of a common nontarget to identify a bait that is preferred by wild pigs and not by white‐tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus).

Dietary and Ranging Behavior of Semi‐Free Ranging Lemur catta and Varecia rubra at Myakka City Lemur Reserve, Florida, USA

open access: yesZoo Biology, EarlyView.
Betsiboka, a female red ruffed lemur (Varecia rubra) eating Carolina redroot in the Tower forest. ABSTRACT Lemurs are severely threatened due to anthropogenic habitat loss and climate change. Therefore, understanding how lemurs adapt their diets to novel habitats is critically important for maintaining healthy wild populations and effectively managing ...

Status of ash (Fraxinus spp.) in mixed hardwood post‐outbreak forests near the epicentre of the emerald ash borer invasion

open access: yesAgricultural and Forest Entomology, EarlyView.
The persistence and health of ash populations were characterized in post‐outbreak forests near the epicentre of the emerald ash borer (EAB) invasion in North America. Regenerating ash remained abundant, but densities of understory ash were higher in wetlands (hydric), while ash remained at the seedling stage in riparian (mesic) and upland (xeric ...

Experimental and Numerical Research on the Splitting Capacity of European Beech Beams Loaded Perpendicular to the Grain by Connections: Influence of Different Geometrical Parameters

open access: yesApplied Sciences
In the present work, single- and double-dowel joints following different geometric configurations are experimentally and numerically investigated to derive the splitting behaviour of beech wood (Fagus sylvatica L.), one of the most widespread hardwood ...

Rosemary metabolite carnosic acid opens Kv1.1 via its voltage sensor and corrects Kv1.1‐linked episodic ataxia in mice

open access: yesBritish Journal of Pharmacology, EarlyView.
Background and Purpose Episodic ataxia type 1 (EA1) is an autosomal dominant neurological disorder caused primarily by loss‐of‐function mutations in the voltage‐gated potassium channel Kv1.1 (KCNA1). Small molecules that restore Kv1.1 activity hold promise as targeted therapies for EA1, yet current pharmacological strategies remain limited ...

Honokiol regulates Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS)‐associated pulmonary fibrosis via the miR‐19a‐3p/POSTN axis

open access: yesBritish Journal of Pharmacology, EarlyView.
Abstract Background and Purpose Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and subsequent pulmonary fibrosis are associated with high mortality and limited treatment options. Periostin (POSTN) is a profibrotic mediator predicted to be regulated by microRNA‐19a‐3p (miR‐19a‐3p), but the relevance of this axis in ARDS‐associated pulmonary fibrosis remains

Portable Smoking Ovens: What Are the PAH Levels in Grilled and Smoked Rainbow Trout?

open access: yesFishes
Fish smoking is one of the oldest preservation methods and has traditional forms in most parts of the world, each with distinct variables. The presence of PAHs in smoked fish is of great concern for producers and consumers alike, as PAHs have great ...

Comprehensive framework for assessing and optimizing existing research networks

open access: yesConservation Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Conservation, monitoring, and research networks, or collections of ecological research sites unified under a common mission of data collection or a research mission, are essential infrastructure for understanding large landscapes. However, most networks developed opportunistically over decades rather than through systematic design, creating ...
