Expanding access to harm reduction in rural communities through community-informed public health vending machines

open access: yesHarm Reduction Journal
Background The opioid epidemic continues to disproportionately impact rural communities across the United States, where structural barriers, including geographic isolation, limited public health infrastructure, and heightened stigma, restrict access to ...

Hidden populations: discovering the differences between the known and the unknown drug using populations in the Republic of Georgia

open access: yesHarm Reduction Journal, 2019
Background The HIV epidemic in Georgia is increasing. Data shows that compared to previous years, Georgia has increasingly more HIV-infected individuals than previous assessments. Select client groups remain hard to reach by harm reduction programs.

Disordered but rhythmic—the role of intrinsic protein disorder in eukaryotic circadian timing

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Unstructured domains known as intrinsically disordered regions (IDRs) are present in nearly every part of the eukaryotic core circadian oscillator. IDRs enable many diverse inter‐ and intramolecular interactions that support clock function. IDR conformations are highly tunable by post‐translational modifications and environmental conditions, which ...

The harms of promoting ‘Zero Harm’ [PDF]

open access: yesBMJ Quality & Safety, 2019
In this issue, Amalberti and Vincent1 ask ‘what strategies we might adopt to protect patients when healthcare systems and organizations are under stress and simply cannot provide the standard of care they aspire to’. This is clearly a critical and much overdue question, as many healthcare organisations are in an almost constant state of stress from ...

Protein pyrophosphorylation by inositol pyrophosphates — detection, function, and regulation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Protein pyrophosphorylation is an unusual signaling mechanism that was discovered two decades ago. It can be driven by inositol pyrophosphate messengers and influences various cellular processes. Herein, we summarize the research progress and challenges of this field, covering pathways found to be regulated by this posttranslational modification as ...

Reducing the nicotine content of tobacco by grafting with eggplant

open access: yesBMC Plant Biology, 2020
Background Nicotine is a stimulant and potent parasympathomimetic alkaloid that accounts for 96–98% of alkaloid content. A reduction in the amount of nicotine in cigarettes to achieve a non-addictive level is necessary.

Integration of circadian and hypoxia signaling via non‐canonical heterodimerization

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
CLOCK, BMAL1, and HIFs are basic helix‐loop‐helix and Per‐Arnt‐Sim domain (bHLH‐PAS) proteins, which function as transcription factors. bHLH‐PAS proteins are designated in two classes. Many class I proteins are regulated by environmental signals via their PAS domains, but such signals have not been identified for all.

Do Global Trade Distortions Still Harm Developing Country Farmers?

open access: yes, 2006
We estimate the impact of global merchandise trade distortions and services regulations on agricultural value added in various countries. Using the latest versions of the GTAP database and the GTAP-AGR model of the global economy, our results suggest ...
