Baseline Design for a Next Generation Wide-Field-of-View Very-High-Energy Gamma-Ray Observatory

open access: yes, 2017
The TeV gamma ray sky is observable by recording footprints of extensive air showers with an array of particle detectors. In the northern hemisphere there are currently two projects employing this technique: The HAWC gamma ray observatory which is ...

Phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinase as a target of pathogens—friend or foe?

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This graphical summary illustrates the roles of phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinases (PI4Ks). PI4Ks regulate key cellular processes and can be hijacked by pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, to support their intracellular replication. Their dual role as essential host enzymes and pathogen cofactors makes them promising drug targets.

The relationship between German banks and large German firms [PDF]

open access: yes
German banks are often criticized, or praised, depending on a person's viewpoint, for owning German industry and for playing an active part in corporate control. The author argues that this misrepresents German banking.

Protein pyrophosphorylation by inositol pyrophosphates — detection, function, and regulation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Protein pyrophosphorylation is an unusual signaling mechanism that was discovered two decades ago. It can be driven by inositol pyrophosphate messengers and influences various cellular processes. Herein, we summarize the research progress and challenges of this field, covering pathways found to be regulated by this posttranslational modification as ...

Computing invariants of algebraic group actions in arbitrary characteristic

open access: yes, 2007
Let G be an affine algebraic group acting on an affine variety X. We present an algorithm for computing generators of the invariant ring K[X]^G in the case where G is reductive.

On the design of a wireless multi-antenna monitoring system [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
In this paper we investigate the design of a wireless monitoring system. This system consists of several wireless monitoring units, each transmitting data collected from sensors. This data is received and processed at a central control unit.

The newfound relationship between extrachromosomal DNAs and excised signal circles

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Extrachromosomal DNAs (ecDNAs) contribute to the progression of many human cancers. In addition, circular DNA by‐products of V(D)J recombination, excised signal circles (ESCs), have roles in cancer progression but have largely been overlooked. In this Review, we explore the roles of ecDNAs and ESCs in cancer development, and highlight why these ...

The harm threshold and Mill’s harm principle

open access: yesTheoretical Medicine and Bioethics, 2023
AbstractThe Harm Threshold (HT) holds that the state may interfere in medical decisions parents make on their children’s behalf only when those decisions are likely to cause serious harm to the child. Such a high bar for intervention seems incompatible with both parental obligations and the state’s role in protecting children’s well-being.

Identifying Harm Events in Clinical Care through Medical Narratives

open access: yes, 2017
Preventable medical errors are estimated to be among the leading causes of injury and death in the United States. To prevent such errors, healthcare systems have implemented patient safety and incident reporting systems.
