Nesting ecology of an ice‐associated seabird, Kittlitz's murrelet, at the northern edge of its range

open access: yesWildlife Society Bulletin, EarlyView.
We studied the Kittlitz's murrelet, an ice‐associated seabird of conservation concern, at the northern edge of its range. Over a 2‐year period, we estimated nest density and success at 2 sites, captured and telemetered nesting murrelets, and tested the use of a thermal camera to improve nest detection.

Water pollution from swine factory farms poses a threat to endangered and threatened species

open access: yesConservation Science and Practice, EarlyView.
Abstract Factory farms, or concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs), generate millions of tons of manure each year in the United States. The storage, handling, and land application of this manure leads to air, water, and climate pollution, which disproportionately impacts low‐income communities of color and poses additional public health and ...

Management Participants Perceive That Structural Barriers, Not Information Needs, Most Impede Adaptation in U.S. Fisheries Management

open access: yesFish and Fisheries, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Fisheries are facing increasingly frequent and severe climate change‐related stressors such as marine heatwaves, harmful algal blooms, and species distribution shifts. Many fisheries management bodies have been working to increase the capacity of their regulatory systems to adapt to these new conditions, but progress has been slow and ...

Interdisciplinary strategies for the management of harmful algal blooms: prospects & comprehensive review

open access: yesDiscover Environment
In recent decades, with the continuous development of global climate change and industrialization, the majority of coastal waters globally are experiencing escalating eutrophication, with a concomitant increase in the frequency of harmful algal blooms ...

Comprehensive analysis of harmful algal blooms in indonesia: from occurrence to impact [PDF]

open access: yesBIO Web of Conferences
The occurrence and frequency of harmful algal blooms have become a significant problem in Indonesia's coastal waters since 1991. This article aims to thoroughly analyze the diversity of algal species involved in these harmful algal blooms (HABs).

The Effects of Nutrient Additions on Kokanee in Dworshak Reservoir, Idaho

open access: yesFisheries Management and Ecology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT We investigated the effects of whole reservoir nitrogen (N) addition on kokanee growth in Dworshak Reservoir, Idaho. We hypothesized that N addition would improve the growth of kokanee (Oncorhynchus nerka) at a given level of abundance by increasing the availability of Daphnia, an important food source.

‘It's not much, but it's honest work’: The status of environmental DNA analyses of fish biodiversity in southern Africa

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Environmental DNA (eDNA) biodiversity surveys have the power to transform the detection of species in natural environments, which is crucial for the conservation and management of freshwater, estuarine and marine environments. Globally, eDNA‐based analyses have increased significantly, with fishes being the most widely studied aquatic ...

Valuation of Marine Ecosystem Threshold Effects : Application of Choice Experiments to Value Algal Bloom in the Black Sea Coast of Bulgaria [PDF]

open access: yes
Algal bloom arises in part from anthropogenic emissions of nutrients into the coastal zone. Increased interest in water quality in coastal and marine areas stemming from the Water Framework Directive and the Marine Strategy Framework Directive leads to ...

Fish welfare in a changing world: New developments and current challenges

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract The welfare of non‐human animals is central to ethical discussions on animal use, with increasing attention to fish welfare across research, aquaria, aquaculture, and fisheries. This paper reviews current theoretical approaches to animal welfare and recent advances in defining and assessing fish welfare since the seminal paper by Huntingford ...

The Value of Information in Predicting Harmful Algal Blooms

open access: yesJournal of Environmental Management
Environmental decision-making is inherently subject to uncertainty. However, decisions are often urgent, and whether to take direct action or invest in collecting additional data beforehand is pervasive. To make this trade-off explicit, the value of information (VoI) theory offers a powerful decision analytic tool to quantify the expected benefit of ...
