Locomotor Behavior of Flightless Harmonia axyridis Pallas (Col., Coccinellidae)

To improve the efficiency of the ladybeetle Harmonia axyridis as a biological control agent against aphids, a flightless population was produced by feeding adults with a mutagen and selecting their progeny for non-flying but otherwise morphologically normal individuals.

In summer 2008, larvae, pupae and adults of Harmonia axyridis (Pallas) (Coleoptera Coccinellidae) were found in several localities in northern Italy. The imported Harmonia axyridis ladybug infests homes in northern West Virginia from fall through spring, causing allergic disease. Retrospective single-practice chart reviews were performed: (1) all skin prick tests (1400 included ladybug) in a community allergy practice over 4 years and (2) clinical analysis of 400 randomly chosen patients.
