Harmonic mean for subspace selection

2008 19th International Conference on Pattern Recognition, 2008
Under the homoscedastic Gaussian assumption, it has been shown that Fisherpsilas linear discriminant analysis (FLDA) suffers from the class separation problem when the dimensionality of subspace selected by FLDA is strictly less than the class number minus 1, i.e., the projection to a subspace tends to merge close class pairs.

A Diophantine equation with the harmonic mean

Periodica Mathematica Hungarica, 2019
Let $$f\in \mathbb {Q}[x]$$ be a polynomial without multiple roots and $$\deg {f}\ge 2$$. We give conditions for $$f=x^2+bx+c$$ under which the Diophantine equation $$2f(x)f(y)=f(z)(f(x)+f(y))$$ has infinitely many nontrivial integer solutions and prove that this equation has infinitely many rational parametric solutions for $$f=x^2+bx$$ with nonzero ...

The emotional meaning of harmonic intervals

Cognitive Processing, 2008
The present study reexamines the hypothesis that there exist emotional attributions specific to simple musical elements. In Experiment 1, groups of participants, with varying musical expertise, rated the emotional meaning of four natural intervals heard as two harmonic sine waves.

The harmonic or geometric mean

ACM SIGARCH Computer Architecture News, 2006
For several decades, computer scientists have been arguing which mean is more appropriate for summarizing computer performance: the harmonic or the geometric. We show that many test cases used in the past to discredit one mean or the other are either artificial or incidental.

Fuzzy harmonic mean operators

International Journal of Intelligent Systems, 2009
Summary: Harmonic mean is a conservative average, which is widely used to aggregate central tendency data. In the existing literature, the harmonic mean is generally considered as a fusion technique of numerical data information. In this paper, we investigate the situations in which the input data are expressed in fuzzy values and develop some fuzzy ...

Harmonic Mean Linear Discriminant Analysis

IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering, 2019
In machine learning and data mining, dimensionality reduction is one of the main tasks. Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) is a widely used supervised dimensionality reduction algorithm and it has attracted a lot of research interests. Classical Linear Discriminant Analysis finds a subspace to minimize within-class distance and maximize between-class ...
