Nonuniform beams with harmonically related overtones for use in percussion instruments
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1991Beams used in certain percussion instruments with definite pitch such as marimba, xylophone, and vibraphone are undercut in order to bring the frequencies of the first few overtones into a harmonic relationship with the fundamental frequency. This paper addresses the problem of determining the optimal dimensions of the undercut so that the frequencies ...

Finite element matrix equations, derived from two-dimensional piezoelectric high frequency plate theory are solved to study the vibrational behavior of the third overtone of thickness shear in square and circular SC-cut quartz resonators. The mass-loading and electric effects of electrodes are included.

The Departure of the Overtones of a Vibrating String from a True Harmonic Series
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1938The changes in frequency caused by variations in tension due to the amplitude of vibration of a wire are treated by the method of perturbations. The constraints introduced by the bridges at the end nodes as studied by Raman, and on the bending moments due to the stiffness of the wire are included in the treatment. The overtones do not, in general, form

The decay of excited stretching overtones of some local modes (C–H, C 3/4 C,C=C, C=O) attached to a hybrocarbon chain is theoretically investigated. The assumptions used in a previous paper [A. Lami and G. Villani, J. Chem. Phys. 88, 5186 (1988)] are critically examined and the model is improved by allowing the transfer of up to three quanta from the ...

Abstract A method is developed for calculating Bechmann's Number for the harmonic overtones of antisymmetric thickness-shear vibrations of crystal plates. In most cases the solution can be expressed as a simple, explicit formula. Values of Bechmann's Number for the AT-cut-quartz plate for the first ten modes are calculated for the ranges of ...

Previous papers and experiments have well documented the drive level dependency in a single mode. The parameters governing drive level dependency in quartz resonators however are still not well understood. We show in this paper the nonlinear interactions of the 3rdovertone of thickness shear (f3) mode and the fundamental thickness shear mode (f1) on ...

Two methods are described for calculating Bechmann's number for harmonic overtones of thickness/twist modes in rotated Y-cut quartz plates: one based on an exact solution of the equations of elasticity and the other based on an asymptotic form of the exact solution.
