The design of bells with harmonic overtones

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2003
Musical bells have had limited application due to the presence of inharmonic partials in the lower part of their acoustic spectra. A series of bells has been designed that contains up to seven partial frequencies in the harmonic series beginning at the fundamental frequency. This was achieved by choosing geometries for finite-element analysis models in

The overtone structure of acoustic fluctuations due to harmonic variations in sound speed (L)

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2005
Explicit relations are derived between the acoustic pressure and a sound speed that is periodic. They are derived for the Pekeris waveguide, and extended to the range and depth-dependent adiabatic mode/WKB case. As expected, acoustic pressure is found to fluctuate at the sound speed fundamental and its overtones.

A mathematical study about the sustaining phenomenon of overtone in Flageolet harmonics on bowed string instruments

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2023
Flageolet harmonics is a playing technique, in which a player lightly touches a nodal point on a string with their finger. Previous studies have reported that the harmonic sound sustains for a short time after the finger is removed from the string while flageolet harmonics is performed on bowed string instruments.

TE Harmonic Overtone Mode Energy-Trapped Ceramic Filter with Narrow Frequency Tolerance

Japanese Journal of Applied Physics, 1997
Experimental studies have been made on the suppression of two major spurious responses, i.e., inharmonic overtones and the 6th thickness-shear-mode harmonic overtone, to realize a 3rd overtone thickness-extension double-mode bandpass filter using PbTiO3 ceramic substrates.

Separation of harmonic sounds using multipitch analysis and linear models for the overtone series

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2002
A signal processing method for the separation of concurrent harmonic sounds is described. The method is based on a two-stage approach. First, a multiple fundamental frequency estimator is applied to find initial sound parameters which are reliable, but inaccurate and static.

Nonuniform beams with harmonically related overtones for use in percussion instruments

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1991
Beams used in certain percussion instruments with definite pitch such as marimba, xylophone, and vibraphone are undercut in order to bring the frequencies of the first few overtones into a harmonic relationship with the fundamental frequency. This paper addresses the problem of determining the optimal dimensions of the undercut so that the frequencies ...

Inelastic neutron scattering spectra of alkali metal (Na, K) bifluorides: The harmonic overtone of v3

Chemical Physics, 1982
Abstract Inelastic neutron scattering spectra of MFHF (M  Na and K) have been measured up to energy transfers of ca. 4000 cm−1 Both 0 → 1 and 0 → 2 transitions of the bending (v2), and antisymmetric stretching (v3) modes were observed. A normal harmonic (i.e.

The effect of harmonic overtones in relation to “sharpness” for perceived brightness of distorted guitar timbre

Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2016
Perceived timbral brightness is often predicted by “sharpness,” which is the conventional predictor described by von Bismarck. Perceived brightness and the predicted “sharpness” value increases when the energy of harmonic overtones in high-frequency range increases.

Numerical algorithms and results for SC-cut quartz plates vibrating at the third harmonic overtone of thickness shear

1993 Proceedings IEEE Ultrasonics Symposium, 1993
Finite element matrix equations, derived from two-dimensional piezoelectric high frequency plate theory are solved to study the vibrational behavior of the third overtone of thickness shear in square and circular SC-cut quartz resonators. The mass-loading and electric effects of electrodes are included.

High power ultrasonic transducer with broadband frequency characteristics at all overtones and harmonics

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2006
A transducer assembly for receiving a stimulating signal and producing ultrasound therefrom at one or more frequencies, over an ultrabroad bandwidth at each frequency, includes a front mass disposed about a central axis, and a back mass disposed about the central axis, laterally offset from the front mass.
