Keban ve Karakaya baraj inşaatlarından önceki kurtarma kazıları sayesinde, Harput ve yakın çevre coğrafyasında, çok sayıda paleolojik bölge olduğu ortaya çıkarılmıştır. Harput coğrafyasında bulunan bölgelerde yürütülen kazılarda ilk Kalkolitikten (MÖ 4500-3500) ve son Kalkolitiğe (MÖ 3500-3000) özgü seramik ve diğer objeler bulunmuştur.
