This study of Heinz Hartmann's contributions emphasises change within continuity. Specifically, it is argued that he both integrated and changed significantly Freud's structural theory--his 'ego psychology'. This he did through his then-modern concept of adaptation.

There is still an important controversy about the optimal management of colonic diverticular disease, complicated by peritonitis. Most surgeons have always been reluctant to perform a primary anastomosis in the presence of diffuse peritonitis, and were mostly in favour of the Hartmann's procedure. Some even preferred the three stage procedure.
