First report of amphizoic amoebae isolated from edible Oyster mushroom- Pleurotus sajor-caju (Singer, 1949) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
The present document serves as the first evidence that describes the presence of amphizoic amoebae in cap, stalk and internal tissues such as gills of the edible Oyster mushrooms, Pleurotus sajor-caju, packaged, and sold for public consumption.

Purification and specificity of bacteriolytic enzyme I from Hartmannella glebae [PDF]

open access: yesApplied and Environmental Microbiology, 1977
A soil amoeba (Hartmannella glebae), when grown in conjunction with Enterobacter aerogenes and Alcaligenes faecalis, produced two enzymes. Enzyme I was purified by gel filtration on Sephadex G-100 and chromatography on diethylaminoethyl-cellulose. It is a basic protein.

Synthesis of unsaturated fatty acids in the slime mold Physarum polycephalum and the zooflagellates Leishmania tarentolae, Trypanosoma lewisi, and Crithidia sp.: a comparative study

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 1965
On the basis of the unsaturated fatty acids which they synthesize, protists can be grouped in a meaningful way. Thus, the unsaturated fatty acids of the true slime mold are identical with the unsaturated fatty acids of the soil amoebae Acanthamoeba and ...

Prevalence and diversity of Chlamydiales and other amoeba-resisting bacteria in domestic drinking water systems. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
A growing number of human infections incriminate environmental bacteria that have evolved virulent mechanisms to resist amoebae and use them as a replicative niche. These bacteria are designated amoeba-resisting bacteria (ARB).

First Report of Hartmannella keratitis in a Cosmetic Soft Contact Lens Wearer in Iran

open access: yesIranian Journal of Parasitology, 2013
Background: Poor hygiene will provide good condition for corneal infections by opportunistic free-living amoebae (FLA) in soft contact lens wearers. In the present study an amoebic keratitis due to Hartmannella has been recognized in a 22-year-old girl ...

Sessile Legionella pneumophila is able to grow on surfaces and generate structured monospecies biofilms [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Currently, models for studying Legionella pneumophila biofilm formation rely on multi-species biofilms with low reproducibility or on growth in rich medium, where planktonic growth is unavoidable.

Microbiological and Physicochemical Quality of Well Water Used as a Source of Public Supply

open access: yesAir, Soil and Water Research, 2010
The sources of microbial and chemical contamination of groundwater are numerous and have severe implications for public health. The objective was to determine the microbiological and physicochemical quality of wells in the west and east of the Cuautla ...

The CRISPR-Associated Gene cas2 of Legionella pneumophila Is Required for Intracellular Infection of Amoebae

open access: yesmBio, 2013
Recent studies have shown that the clustered regularly interspaced palindromic repeats (CRISPR) array and its associated (cas) genes can play a key role in bacterial immunity against phage and plasmids.

Encystation:the most prevalent and underinvestigated differentiation pathway of eukaryotes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Not long ago, protists were considered one of four eukaryote kingdoms, but recent gene-based phylogenies show that they contribute to all nine eukaryote subdomains.

Identification of new amoebae strains in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss, Walbaum) farms affected by nodular gill disease (NGD) in Northeastern Italy

open access: yesJournal of Fish Diseases, Volume 47, Issue 6, June 2024.
Abstract Nodular gill disease (NGD) is an emerging condition associated with amoeba trophozoites in freshwater salmonid farms. However, unambiguous identification of the pathogens still must be achieved. This study aimed to identify the amoeba species involved in periodic NGD outbreaks in two rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) farms in Northeastern ...
