Impact of Secondary Prevention on Mortality in the Building Trades National Medical Screening Program: Effectiveness of Occupational High‐Risk Management

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Industrial Medicine, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Since 1997 the Building Trades National Medical Screening Program (BTMed) has offered medical exams to construction workers employed in US nuclear weapons facilities. The process consists of two steps: (1) a detailed work history interview; and (2) a medical exam.

Association between Triglyceride to HDL-C Ratio (TG/HDL-C) and Insulin Resistance in Chinese Patients with Newly Diagnosed Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2016
Objectives To explore the association between the triglyceride to HDL-C ratio (TG/HDL-C) and insulin resistance in Chinese patients with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus. Methods Patients with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus (272 men and

Are There Causal Associations Between Obsessive‐Compulsive Disorder and Cardiometabolic Phenotypes? A Genetic Correlation and Bi‐Directional Mendelian Randomization Study

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Medical Genetics Part B: Neuropsychiatric Genetics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT In epidemiological studies, obsessive‐compulsive disorder (OCD) is robustly associated with increased risk of cardiometabolic disorders, including cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, and obesity. However, the mechanisms behind these associations are unclear. We conducted genetic correlation analyses to explore shared genetic etiology and

Waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) and triglyceride to HDL-C ratio (TG/HDL-c) as predictors of cardiometabolic risk.

open access: yesNutricion hospitalaria, 2015
The excessive concentration of fat in the abdominal region is related to a higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD). Studies have been performed to identify simple and effective indicators of abdominal obesity and associated cardiometabolic risk through the use of simple parameters such as anthropometric and biochemical measures.

Is there a Relationship between HDL Cholesterol and Muscle Mass in Post-Menopausal Women? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Menopause coincides with undesirable changes in body composition including increased fat mass and loss of muscle mass (1). One contributing factor to muscle loss is sarcopenia, a low muscle for weight medical condition.

Myristic acid is associated to low plasma HDL cholesterol levels in a Mediterranean population and increases HDL catabolism by enhancing HDL particles trapping to cell surface proteoglycans in a liver hepatoma cell model [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Background: HDL-C plasma levels are modulated by dietary fatty acid (FA), but studies investigating dietary supplementation in FA gave contrasting results. Saturated FA increased HDL-C levels only in some studies.

The triglyceride to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (TG/HDL-C) ratio as a predictor of insulin resistance but not of β cell function in a Chinese population with different glucose tolerance status

open access: yesLipids in Health and Disease, 2016
Triglyceride/high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (TG/HDL-C) ratio was a surrogate marker of IR; however, the relationship of TG/HDL-C with IR might vary by ethnicity. This study aims to investigate whether lipid ratios-TG/HDL-C, cholesterol/high-density

Generating golden Syrian hamsters with conditional alleles via zygote microinjection of CRISPR/Cas9

open access: yesAnimal Models and Experimental Medicine, EarlyView.
We established the first conditional knockout (cKO) model in the golden Syrian hamster by CRISPR/Cas9‐mediated genome editing. Cas9 protein, two sgRNAs, and a donor plasmid carrying loxP‐flanked exon 2 of the ApoF gene were microinjected into one‐cell embryos. The floxed allele was efficiently generated (up to 27%) and transmitted through the germline.

Chronic high‐fat diet induces multi‐organ dysfunction and metabolic homeostasis disruption in Macaca fascicularis

open access: yesAnimal Models and Experimental Medicine, EarlyView.
An 18‐month HFD successfully established a translational Macaca fascicularis model replicating key metabolic disorders (MASH, diabetes, cardiac hypertrophy). MASH was determined by liver biopsy histology, the presence steatosis, inflammatory infiltration, hepatocytic ballooning, and fibrosis were considered as MASH; diabetes was diagnosed according to ...

Plasma proteome correlates of lipid and lipoprotein: biomarkers of metabolic diversity and inflammation in children of rural Nepal. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Proteins involved in lipoprotein metabolism can modulate cardiovascular health. While often measured to assess adult metabolic diseases, little is known about the proteomes of lipoproteins and their relation to metabolic dysregulation and underlying ...
