From HDL-cholesterol to HDL-function: cholesterol efflux capacity determinants
Current Opinion in Lipidology, 2019Purpose of review The validity of HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C) elevation as a therapeutic target has been questioned, in comparison to enhancing HDL functionality. Cholesterol efflux capacity (CEC) is an in-vitro assay that measures the ability of an individual's HDL to promote cholesterol efflux from cholesterol donor cells such as

Thiazolidinediones and Lowered HDL Cholesterol
Diabetes Care, 2005Three publications, including two recently in Diabetes Care, have indicated that a combination of rosiglitazone and fibrates may lower serum HDL cholesterol in some patients (1–3). It is known that a paradoxical fall in HDL cholesterol may occur with fibrates.

Plasma HDL cholesterol and the in vitro esteriflcation of cholesterol
Scandinavian Journal of Clinical and Laboratory Investigation, 1979In vitro esterification of plasma cholesterol was measured in twelve healthy subjects, six of whom had high plasma concentrations of high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, whereas the other six had low concentrations. Irrespective of the method used no difference between the groups with the respect to cholesterol esterification could be ...

Increasing HDL Cholesterol Levels
New England Journal of Medicine, 2004In the past decade, high-density lipoproteins (HDL) have emerged as a new potential therapeutic target for the treatment of cardiovascular disease. The key role of HDL as a carrier of excess cellular cholesterol in the reverse cholesterol transport pathway is believed to provide protection against atherosclerosis.

A 41-year-old man with dyslipidemia, hypertension, and a history of myocardial infarction four years previously comes to establish care. The total cholesterol level is 155 mg per deciliter (4.01 mmol per liter), the low-density lipoprotein cholesterol level 72 mg per deciliter (1.86 mmol per liter), the high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol level ...

Why is HDL‐cholesterol good cholesterol?
Lipid Technology, 2008AbstractThe well recognized ability of high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, sometimes called good cholesterol, to protect against the risk of developing of cardiovascular disease requires an explanation. Such an explanation may be the role that HDL plays in the process of reverse cholesterol transport as practised by cells of the arterial wall ...

Results are presented here on the relationship, in a large city in the Federal Republic of Germany, between HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C) or the HDL-cholesterol/total cholesterol ratio (HDL-C/TC) and the variables smoking, alcohol consumption, Body Mass Index (BMI), and age.

Atherosclerosis, 1981
The effect of cholesterol feeding and estrogen administration on serum lipoproteins and lipoprotein lipid composition was investigated in male rabbits. The lipoprotein fractions were separated by preparative ultracentrifugation and the purity of each fraction was determined by polyacrylamide disc gel electrophoresis.

Measurement of Total Cholesterol, HDL-Cholesterol, and LDL-Cholesterol
Clinics in Laboratory Medicine, 1989Plasma concentrations of LDL and HDL are generally measured in terms of their cholesterol content. This requires the separation of the appropriate lipoprotein-containing fractions. The separation and measurement of each fraction are described.

Abstract: In a cardiovascular survey of 928 men and women aged exactly 30, 40, 50 & 60 years, a correlation between serum cholesterol, cholesterol/HDL‐ratio and arterial blood pressure was found. This correlation was indirectly caused by mutual correlations to relative weight and age as a final result found after multiple rank correlation analysis
