Increasing HDL Cholesterol Levels
New England Journal of Medicine, 2004In the past decade, high-density lipoproteins (HDL) have emerged as a new potential therapeutic target for the treatment of cardiovascular disease. The key role of HDL as a carrier of excess cellular cholesterol in the reverse cholesterol transport pathway is believed to provide protection against atherosclerosis.

Thiazolidinediones and Lowered HDL Cholesterol
Diabetes Care, 2005Three publications, including two recently in Diabetes Care, have indicated that a combination of rosiglitazone and fibrates may lower serum HDL cholesterol in some patients (1–3). It is known that a paradoxical fall in HDL cholesterol may occur with fibrates.

HDL cholesterol transport during inflammation
Current Opinion in Lipidology, 2007The aim of this article is to review recent advances made towards understanding how inflammation and acute phase proteins, particularly serum amyloid A and group IIa secretory phospholipase A2, may alter reverse cholesterol transport by HDL during inflammation and the acute phase response.Findings suggest that the decreased apoA-I content and markedly ...

HDL-Cholesterol Levels in Gouty Patients
1984Lipoprotein abnormalities are common in gout. The most frequent is hypertriglyceridemia, which has been reported in three-quarters of patients with primary gout (1, 2). This alteration may or may not be related to obesity, alcohol consumption, and glucose intolerance (3). Patients with gout secondary to lead nephropathy do not have hypertriglyceridemia

Why is HDL‐cholesterol good cholesterol?
Lipid Technology, 2008AbstractThe well recognized ability of high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, sometimes called good cholesterol, to protect against the risk of developing of cardiovascular disease requires an explanation. Such an explanation may be the role that HDL plays in the process of reverse cholesterol transport as practised by cells of the arterial wall ...

[Determination of HDL-cholesterol].
Zeitschrift fur die gesamte innere Medizin und ihre Grenzgebiete, 1983For the clinical practice methods of the determination of HDL-cholesterol made their way which are based on the precipitation of apolipoprotein-B-containing lipoproteins and a determination of cholesterol following. The expensive methods of the ultracentrifugation serve as reference methods.
