Optical Design for a Head-Mounted Display

open access: yesPresence: Teleoperators and Virtual Environments, 1993
This paper presents a design concept for a head-mounted display, incorporating color stereo vision using commercial LCDs and our own optical relay design. The focus here is on the optical system design, which must meet specifications for a wide field of view, size and cost constraints, and aberration minimization based on human factors.

Virtual Realities: Is there only one advanced image display that astronomers need? [PDF]

open access: yesAstronomy and Computing 50 (2025) 100896
Data visualisation is an essential ingredient of scientific analysis, discovery, and communication. Along with a human (to do the looking) and the data (something to look at), an image display device is a key component of any data visualisation workflow. For the purpose of this work, standard displays include combinations of laptop displays, peripheral

All-passive, transformable optical mapping (ATOM) near-eye display [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2018
We present an all-passive, transformable optical mapping (ATOM) near-eye display based on the "human-centric design" principle. By employing a diffractive optical element, a distorted grating, the ATOM display can project different portions of a 2D display screen to various depths, rendering a real 3D image with correct focus cues.
