From biology to biotechnology: Host‐regulation factors from parasitoid wasps are a source of bioactive molecules with translational potential

open access: yesInsect Molecular Biology, EarlyView.
Parasitoid wasps deploy maternal and embryonic factors to reprogramme host physiology. Venom, calyx fluid, polydnaviruses, teratocytes and larval secretions act in a coordinated, compartmentalised manner. Host‐regulation factors are promising sources of insecticidal, antimicrobial and bioinspired translational molecules.

Thermogenesis‐derived spatiotemporal microclimates guide pollinator movement to ensure pollination

open access: yesJournal of Integrative Plant Biology, EarlyView.
Alocasia odora's microclimatic heterogeneity guides Colocasiomyia fly movement within its inflorescence. During the female stage, midday heat in the upper spadix pushes flies down to the cooler female zone. During the male stage, nocturnal warmth in the upper part pulls flies upward and spathe constriction closes the lower female chamber.

Correlative optical, electron, and electrochemical microscopy assessment of localised sulphide reactivity in concrete aggregates

open access: yesJournal of Microscopy, EarlyView.
Abstract Iron‐sulphide‐bearing aggregates can compromise concrete durability when reactive sulphide phases, particularly pyrrhotite (Fe1–xS), oxidise and contribute to internal sulphate attack, cracking, and premature deterioration. Existing aggregate assessment methods, including bulk sulphur measurements, petrographic examination, oxygen consumption ...

Improved primary production and gross respiration measurements using the H218O technique with membrane inlet mass spectrometry and introduction of a small volume–uniform irradiance incubation chamber

open access: yesJournal of Phycology, EarlyView.
Abstract An improvement in the H218O technique for phytoplankton gross primary productivity (GPP), net primary productivity (NPP), and gross respiration (GR) is described that reduces cost, labor, and time over the traditional isotope ratio mass spectrometer (IRMS) method.
