A recently completed $120-million headworks is helping Columbus, Ohio, make significant progress in reducing sewer overflows. The innovative facility includes what are believed to be the largest self-cleaning trench-type wet wells in the United States, selected because they reduce space requirements and costs, minimize odors and corrosion potential ...

Transportation Research Record: Journal of the Transportation Research Board, 2016
This report analyzes the impact of smart card fare payments on transit bus dwell time. Shorter dwell times improve travel speeds and reduce headways, which encourage patronage. First, determinants of dwell time are discussed through a review of existing literature.

Learning Headway Estimation in Driving
Human Factors: The Journal of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society, 2007Objective: The main purpose of the present study was to examine to what extent the ability to attain a required headway of 1 or 2 s can be improved through practical driving instruction under real traffic conditions and whether the learning is sustained after a period during which there has been no controlled training.

Four headway models of increasing generality are considered from three points of view. We discuss (i) the value of the models for use as arrival processes in stochastic model building, (ii) some traffic situations where it is known from theoretical considerations, that the models are appropriate, and (iii) empirical evidence to support the models.
