Gender and exposure pathways to zoonotic infections in communities at the interface of wildlife conservation areas of Uganda: A qualitative study

open access: yesGlobal Public Health
The changing climate and increasingly frequent environmental shocks are creating new pressures on land use and intensifying inter-species contact that might foster zoonotic disease transmission.

Impact of Income Inequality on Health: Does Environment Quality Matter? [PDF]

open access: yes
This paper examines the link between health indicators, environmental variables and income inequalities. Theoretically, all the mechanisms developed in the literature underline a negative impact of income inequality on health status.

Do Economic Inequalities Harm Health? Evidence from Europe [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Until recently, there has been a consensus among empirical health economists that there is an association between income inequality and individual health, in line with Wilkinson’s (1992) idea that the psychosocial effects of the former are detrimental to

HEALTH, HEALTH INSURANCE, AND INEQUALITY

open access: yesInternational Economic Review
AbstractThis article identifies a “health premium” of insurance coverage: insured individuals are more likely to maintain good health or recover from poor health. We introduce this feature into a prototypical macrohealth model and estimate the baseline economy by matching the observed joint distribution of health insurance, health, and income over the ...

Book review: what works in reducing inequalities in child health? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The UK has a deservedly strong reputation for work on understanding social inequalities in health. But there is some way to go in ensuring that research and other types of knowledge are used to reduce inequalities in child health in particular.

A Physics Constrained Machine Learning Pipeline for Young's Modulus Prediction in Multimaterial Hyperelastic Cylinders Guided by Contact Mechanics

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Discovery, EarlyView.
A physics‐guided machine learning framework estimates Young's modulus in multilayered multimaterial hyperelastic cylinders using contact mechanics. A semiempirical stiffness law is embedded into a custom neural network, ensuring physically consistent predictions. Validation against experimental and numerical data on C.

“It Is Much Safer to Be Sparse than Connected”: Safe Control of Robotic Swarm Density Dynamics with PDE Optimization with State Constraints

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
This paper proposes a novel control framework to ensure safety of a robotic swarm. A feedback optimization controller is capable of driving the swarm toward a target density while keeping risk‐zone exposure below a safety threshold. Theory and experiments show how safety is more effectively achieved for sparsely connected swarms.

Barriers and Facilitators to Retaining and Reengaging HIV Clients in Care

open access: yesJournal of the International Association of Providers of AIDS Care, 2016
Retention in HIV care is critical to decrease disease-related mortality and morbidity and achieve national benchmarks. However, a myriad of barriers and facilitators impact retention in care; these can be understood within the social–ecological model. To
