A Sleeve Alters the Pressure‐Stretch Curve of a Hyperelastic Balloon to Enable Pre‐Programmed Sequencing

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, Volume 10, Issue 6, March 18, 2025.
This article demonstrates that encasing a hyperelastic balloon in an inextensible sleeve greatly increases its burst pressure. This simple mechanical behavior can be used to produce an asymmetric inflation‐deflation sequence for coupled balloons with different thicknesses so they could serve as a soft robot's rear and front anchors when driven from a ...

Reliability of Noninvasive Assessment of Systolic Pulmonary Artery Pressure by Doppler Echocardiography Compared to Right Heart Catheterization: Analysis in a Large Patient Population

open access: yesJournal of the American Heart Association : Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Disease, 2014
Background Pulmonary artery pressure (PAP) is an important marker in cardiovascular disorders, being closely associated with morbidity and mortality. Noninvasive assessment by Doppler echocardiography is recommended by current guidelines.

Factors associated with post-arrest withdrawal of life-sustaining therapy. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
INTRODUCTION: Most successfully resuscitated cardiac arrest patients do not survive to hospital discharge. Many have withdrawal of life sustaining therapy (WLST) as a result of the perception of poor neurologic prognosis.

Ultra‐Thin Soft Pneumatic Actuation for Minimally Invasive Neural Interfacing

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
Parylene C is a common polymer in bioelectronics, favored for its biological and chemical inertness. However, this makes bonding layers of Parylene C together very challenging. Here it is a laser to selectively weld layers of Parylene C to create high‐pressure fluidic actuation devices.

A novel closed-chest porcine model of chronic ischemic heart failure suitable for experimental research in cardiovascular disease [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Cardiac pathologies are among the leading causes of mortality and morbidity in industrialized countries, with myocardial infarction (MI) representing one of the major conditions leading to heart failure (HF).

Low‐Strain Flexible Ink‐Based Sensors Enable Hyperelastic Inflation Perception Via Geometric Patterning for Balloon‐Type Robots

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
Integrating proprioceptive capabilities in balloon‐type robots enhances safe human–machine interactions. Traditional pressure estimates are inadequate due to nonlinear relationships. Instead, embedding stretchable sensors effectively measures deformation. This design optimizes sensor geometry to minimize damage risks.
