Injuries to the heart

During a 12-year period, 36 patients with cardiac injuries were recorded. Nine suffered penetrating injuries, nine blunt ruptures and 18 contusions. Only two patients with blunt rupture survived, in contrast to six out of seven patients with stab wounds to the heart.

War Injuries of Heart and Mediastinum

In a group of 2811 chest casualties of the Korean conflict treated at Tokyo Army Hospital from August, 1950, to March, 1953, 117 had injuries to heart and mediastinum. This is an incidence of 4.2%. The small number is due, no doubt, to the high initial mortality resulting from such wounds.

Arrow Injury to the Heart

Arrow injury to the heart is a common cause of penetrating trauma in rural areas of underdeveloped nations. We report such a patient who survived 3 days after such an injury and traveled 1000 km with a pulsating arrow in the chest for treatment. The literature on such injuries is reviewed.

Survivor of a stingray injury to the heart

Injuries to the extremities from stingray barbs are not uncommon along the Australian seaboard. Cardiac injuries from stingray barbs are rare, even worldwide, and all but one have been fatal. We report a survivor of a cardiac injury caused by a stingray barb.

The authors had 53 patients with heart injuries under observation; 52 patients were operated on for vital indications. The heart wound was sutured, the concomitant injuries to other organs were removed, and the pericardial and pleural cavities were drained. Air-tightness of the injured heart muscle was attained in all cases.
