The Annals of Thoracic Surgery, 1996Two elderly patients with postinfarction ventricular septal defect underwent repair by endocardial patch with infarct exclusion on a beating heart under normothermic cardiopulmonary bypass with ultra-short-acting beta-blocker infusion. Canadian Medical Association journal, 1973Four patients with traumatic ventricular septal defect following stab wound underwent successful open heart repair. All were symptomatic in spite of minimal hemodynamic disturbances. An additional lesion in the form of a fistulous tract between the aorta and the right atrium occurred in one case.

A penetrating heart injury resulting in ventricular septal defect.

Here we report a case of self-inflicted cardiac injury with glass fragments by a psychiatric patient. The patient presented with cardiogenic shock and was initially treated surgically for a large pneumothorax and cardiac tamponade. A few days later she presented with dyspnoea and hypotension.
