Cardiovascular magnetic resonance for the assessment of patients undergoing transcatheter aortic valve implantation: a pilot study [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Background Before trans-catheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI), assessment of cardiac function and accurate measurement of the aortic root are key to determine the correct size and type of the prosthesis.

Outcomes in Patients Requiring VENO‐Venous Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation After Cardiac Surgery: An Analysis From the PELS‐1 Study

open access: yesArtificial Organs, EarlyView.
We report an insight from the PELS‐1– a multicentre, international registry focusing on postocardiotomy extracorporeal support use between 2000 and 2020. We focused on 24/2163 (1.1%) patients requiring V‐V ECMO after cardiac surgery. Mortality was high, with 21.7% of patients discharged alive and an overall 1‐year survival probability of 12.5 ...

The future of transcatheter mitral valve interventions: competitive or complementary role of repair vs. replacement? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Transcatheter mitral interventions has been developed to address an unmet clinical need and may be an alternative therapeutic option to surgery with the intent to provide symptomatic and prognostic benefit.

Validation of Aortic Blood Flow Simulations During Extracorporeal Circulation Using Phase Contrast Magnetic Resonance Imaging

open access: yesArtificial Organs, EarlyView.
This is the first study assessing in vivo blood flow profiles during extracorporeal circulation (ECC) scenarios. Magnetic resonance imaging data served for the calibration of computational fluid dynamics algorithms, enabling accurate replication of the hemodynamic conditions.

[Prognostication of the outcome of heart valve prosthesis implantation by the method of nonlinear chaos dynamics of the heart rate].

open access: yesVestnik khirurgii imeni I. I. Grekova, 2001
An examination of 39 patients with heart diseases was performed before and after operations by the method of geometrical analysis of the nonlinear chaos (fractal) variability of the cardiac rhythm on the basis of the apparatus-programmed complex "Poly-spectrum". Five-minute-long registrations of ECG were carried on.

In vitro haemodynamic testing of Amplatzer plugs for paravalvular leak occlusion after Transcather Aortic Valve Implantation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Objective: We aimed to in-vitro test Amplatzer devices (Amplatzer Vascular Plug II and Amplatzer Vascular Plug III, SJM St. Paul, MN) in closing PVL generated by transcatheter balloon expandable aortic valve prosthesis in order to quantify the effective ...

Comparison of Intraoperative Doppler Flow Measurements and Algorithmic Flow Estimations in Patients Undergoing Durable Left Ventricular Assist Device Implantation

open access: yesArtificial Organs, EarlyView.
Direct intraoperative HeartMate 3 LVAD flow measurements using an ultrasonic probe revealed consistently higher values by approximately 0.5 L/min compared to device‐estimated flows. This discrepancy remained stable across pump speed settings, highlighting the importance of distinguishing measured from estimated flow in HeartMate 3 patients.

First-In-Human Experience of the New Fully Repositionable IMPERIA Delivery System to Implant the ALLEGRA Transcatheter Heart Valve in Patients With Severe Calcific Aortic Stenosis or Degenerated Surgical Bioprosthesis: Thirty-Day Results of the EMPIRE I Study

open access: yesStructural Heart
Background: The ALLEGRA (Biosensors International) transcatheter heart valve is a self-expanding supra-annular bovine pericardial aortic valve. A new delivery system (IMPERIA™, Biosensors International) has been designed which allows the valve to be ...

Identification of Autologous Tissue Sources and Optimization of a Treatment Method for Intraoperative Manufacturing of Heart Valve Constructs

open access: yesArtificial Organs, EarlyView.
The use of autologous connective tissue, such as pericardium or peritoneum, combined with controlled tissue treatment, has the potential to result in a more durable heart valve prosthesis than current commercial prostheses. ABSTRACT Introduction Valvular heart disease remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality. Current biological and mechanical
