Microstructures of Heat-Affected Zone in Niobium Containing Steels

open access: yesMaterials Transactions, JIM, 1999
In order to understand the effect of niobium additions on the microstructures of the HAZ (heat-affected zone) in mild steels, a plain C-Mn steel (without niobium content) and three niobium containing steels with 0.01, 0.02 and 0.04 mass%Nb, respectively were investigated through simulated HAZ experiments with the heat inputs of 2 × 10 6 , 5 × 10 6 and

Intermetallic Compound Layer Morphology and Distribution in Friction‐Welded Steel–Aluminum Components

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
In this study, how friction‐welding parameters (rotational speed, etc.) affect the morphology, distribution, and local thickness of the intermetallic compound layer (IMC‐layer) in friction‐welded steel‐aluminum hybrid components is investigated. In the results, it is shown that lower speeds (700 rpm) lead to a more uniform, thinner IMC‐layer (<0.5 μm),

Defect Imaging and Detection of Precipitates Using a New Scanning Positron Microbeam [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
We report on a newly developed scanning positron microbeam based on threefold moderation of positrons provided by the high intensity positron source NEPOMUC. For brightness enhancement a remoderation unit with a $100\,$nm thin Ni(100) foil and 9.6% efficiency is applied to reduce the area of the beam spot by a factor of 60.

Non‐Destructive and Mechanical Characterization of the Bond Quality of Co‐Extruded Titanium‐Aluminum Profiles

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study investigates the bond quality of co‐extruded aluminum–titanium hybrid profiles, focusing on the lateral angular co‐extrusion (LACE) process. It examines how heat treatments (HT) affect intermetallic phase formation, bond strength, and material properties.
