Improving surface hardness of AISI 1045 steels using melamine derived from urea

open access: yesHeat Treatment and Surface Engineering
AISI 1045 steels are medium carbon steels used in applications that require greater strength and hardness such as gears, railway wheels and tracks, crankshafts, rolls, axles and other structural components.

Large‐scale bidirectional arrayed genetic screens identify OXR1 and EMC4 as modifiers of αSynuclein aggregation

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Activation of the mitochondrial protein OXR1 increases pSyn129 αSynuclein aggregation by lowering ATP levels and altering mitochondrial membrane potential, particularly in response to MSA‐derived fibrils. In contrast, ablation of the ER protein EMC4 enhances autophagic flux and lysosomal clearance, broadly reducing α‐synuclein aggregates.

Enhancement of Mechanical Properties of Hot-Forged 6082 Suspension Parts via Rapid IR Heat Treatment

open access: yes, 2018
Post-forging heat treatment is often necessary to achieve the mechanical properties required for aluminum alloy forged parts. In this study, hot-forged 6082 suspension parts are used to study the effect of rapid infrared (IR) heat treatment.

Mass spectrometry based identification of AMP‐O‐Tris generated by Thermococcus onnurineus Cas10

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Isolated Thermococcus onnurineus Cas10 generates the noncanonical ATP‐derived product AMP‐O‐Tris while in Tris‐containing buffer as identified via mass spectrometry, revealing relaxed nucleophile selectivity under isolated conditions. These findings suggest that multiprotein Csm complex assembly restricts Cas10 reactivity toward canonical cyclic ...

Effect of Heat Treatment on Pore Architecture and Associated Property Charges in Plasma Sprayed TBCs

open access: yes, 2007
Plasma sprayed TBCs exhibit many interlamellar pores, voids and microcracks. These microstructural features are primarily responsible for the low global stiffnesses and the low thermal conductivities commonly exhibited by such coatings.

Microstructure Control for Enhancing the Combination of Strength and Elongation in Ti-6Al-4V through Heat Treatment

open access: yes
For the application of Ti-6Al-4V alloys in urban air mobility, safety is very important, so achieving excellent strength and toughness is essential to prevent fractures.

Identifying transcription factors controlling the basal expression of human MRP4 highlights a substantial role for Sp1

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The MRP4 transporter exports several drugs and signaling molecules. Here, we identified key promoter elements regulating basal MRP4 expression. Using reporter assays, we defined a conserved region with essential Sp1 and contributory Ets sites, which controlled basal MRP4 expression.

An Investigation of Heat Treatment Residual Stress of Type I, II, III for 8Cr4Mo4V Steel Bearing Ring Using FEA-CPFEM-GPA Method

open access: yes
The heat treatment residual stress of 8Cr4Mo4V steel bearings seriously affects the contact fatigue life. The micro stress concentration at the carbide interface leads to the initiation of micro cracks.

Acute caffeine treatment protects the developing retina from ischemia‐induced cell death

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Caffeine reduces cell death in the developing retina under ischemia (OGD). This effect does not involve BDNF upregulation or antioxidant pathways (NRF2/VEGF). Neuroprotection occurs mainly through adenosine A2A receptor antagonism, decreasing glutamate release and excitotoxicity, highlighting caffeine's potential as an acute neuroprotective agent in ...
