Microwave Healing Performance of Asphalt Mixture Containing Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) Slag and Graphene Nanoplatelets (GNPs)

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2020
Pavement preventive maintenance is an important tool for extending the service life of the road pavements. Microwave heating seems to be a promising technology for this application, as bituminous materials have the potential to self-repair above a ...

Degradation mechanism of the von Willebrand factor A2 domain by nattokinase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Nattokinase, a natto‐derived protease, exhibits potent antithrombotic effects. This study demonstrates that nattokinase directly cleaves the von Willebrand factor (vWF) A2 domain in vitro. Unlike the native regulator ADAMTS13, nattokinase degrades folded vWF independently of shear stress.

Efficiency of electrically heated windows [PDF]

open access: yesEnergy and Buildings, 2004
Abstract This study defined, derived and calculated the efficiency of electrical energy use in electrically heated windows which may be used for improving thermal comfort near glazing. In a cold climate, a warm glass surface is a unique possibility for thermal conditioning. The effects of surface and outdoor temperatures and the U-value of the window

District heating networks: enhancement of the efficiency

open access: yesInsights into Regional Development, 2019
During the decades the district heating’s (DH) advantages (more cost-efficient heat generation and reduced air pollution) overcompensated the additional costs of transmission and distribution of the centrally produced thermal energy to consumers.

TRAIL‐PEG‐Apt‐PLGA nanosystem as an aptamer‐targeted drug delivery system potential for triple‐negative breast cancer therapy using in vivo mouse model

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Aptamers are used both therapeutically and as targeting agents in cancer treatment. We developed an aptamer‐targeted PLGA–TRAIL nanosystem that exhibited superior therapeutic efficacy in NOD/SCID breast cancer models. This nanosystem represents a novel biotechnological drug candidate for suppressing resistance development in breast cancer.

Genetic attenuation of ALDH1A1 increases metastatic potential and aggressiveness in colorectal cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Aldehyde dehydrogenase 1A1 (ALDH1A1) is a cancer stem cell marker in several malignancies. We established a novel epithelial cell line from rectal adenocarcinoma with unique overexpression of this enzyme. Genetic attenuation of ALDH1A1 led to increased invasive capacity and metastatic potential, the inhibition of proliferation activity, and ultimately ...

Engineered extracellular vesicles enriched with the miR‐214/199a cluster enhance the efficacy of chemotherapy in ovarian cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Loss of the miR‐214/199a cluster is associated with recurrence in ovarian cancer. Engineered small extracellular vesicles (m214‐sEVs) elevate miR‐214‐3p/miR‐199a‐5p in tumor cells, suppress β‐catenin, TLR4, and YKT6 signaling, reprogram tumor‐derived sEV cargo, reduce chemoresistance and migration, and enhance carboplatin efficacy and survival in ...

On the Maximum Efficiency of Realistic Heat Engines [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Journal of Mechanical Engineering Education, 2007
In 1975 Curzon and Ahlborn ( Am. J. Phys; vol. 43, p. 22) studied a heat engine with thermal losses and derived an expression for its efficiency that described the performance of actual heat machines better than the traditional result due to Carnot.
