Heave damping of spar platform for offshore wind turbine with heave plate

Ocean Engineering, 2016
This paper presents the effects of heave plate on heave damping of spar with single and two heave plates for supporting the offshore wind turbine. Heave free decay tests are carried out experimentally on 1:50 scale model of spar with single and two heave plates for finding the heave damping.

Investigation of heave response of the deepwater octagonal FDPSO using various heave plate configurations [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Application, 2017
Heave plates can be employed to control undesirable heave motion amplitudes of the deepwater octagonal Floating, Drilling, Production, Storage, and Offloading (FDPSO) platform. Numerical simulations and model tests were applied to analyze and investigate the hydrodynamic response and the feasibility of the heave plate configurations.

CFD approach to heave damping of spar with heave plates with experimental validation

Applied Ocean Research, 2021
Abstract Spar, tension leg platform, and semi-submersibles use heave plates to reduce heave response by increasing heave damping and added mass. Conventional practice is to use a linear damping ratio, which is typically obtained from free heave decay tests or Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations.

Influence of heave plate topology on reaction force

Ocean Engineering, 2021
Abstract In this study, we explore the role of heave plate topology on fluid reaction forces using three, representative shapes: a hexagonal flat plate, a hexagonal conic with an open top, and the same with a closed top that encloses a fluid mass. We force each test article sinusoidally in a quiescent tank and decompose the reaction force using forms

Influence of Heave Plate Geometry on the Heave Response of Classic Spars

21st International Conference on Offshore Mechanics and Arctic Engineering, Volume 1, 2002
A production spar designed for West African (WA) offshore conditions must consider possible resonance with long period swell, which might result in large amplitude heave oscillations. Preliminary study of a classic spar with diameter of 39 m (128 ft) and draft 198 m (650 ft) for a WA application led the authors to believe that excessive heave response ...

MODELLING THE HEAVE OSCILLATIONS OF VERTICAL CYLINDERS WITH DAMPING PLATES

International Journal of Maritime Engineering, 2021
The laminar flow around heaving axisymmetric and three-dimensional cylinders with damping plates is numerically studied for various Keulegan-Carpenter numbers. The Navier-Stokes equations are solved using OpenFOAM, which is applied to the flow on a moving mesh. For processing of results the semi-empirical Morison equation is used.

A Review of the Hydrodynamic Characteristics of Heave Plates

Advanced Materials Research, 2013
Heave plates can increase the added mass and viscous damping of marine structures. It's a more economical way to improve the stability of the marine structures' heave movement by adding heave plates compared to other methods. Many scholars have studied on the influencing factors of theirs properties.

Experimental Investigations on the Hydrodynamic Characteristics of Heave Plate

Volume 5: Ocean Engineering, 2013
Heave plates are installed in Spar platforms to improve the heave motion performance of the platforms. The heave plates not only increase the equivalent added mass of the platform but also provide extra damping to the system. This article presents an experimental study on the hydrodynamic characteristics of an isolate heave plate.

Model Experiments of Hydrodynamic Forces on Heave Plates

24th International Conference on Offshore Mechanics and Arctic Engineering: Volume 1, Parts A and B, 2005
For truss SPAR platforms, damping plates are employed to increase the added mass and viscous drag in the heave direction. The paper aims to investigate experimentally the hydrodynamic forces on heave plates with different opening sizes. Model scale experiments were carried out on three 40 by 40cm flat plates to investigate the effects of oscillation ...

Effect of Viscous Damping on Hydrodynamic Response of Spar with Heave Plate

open access: yesAquatic Procedia, 2015
Abstract In the present paper, effect of viscous damping on the heave response of spar is studied using WAMIT software for spar with single and two heave plates. For spar with single heave plate, a plate is attached at the keel of the spar and the diameter of the heave plate is varied.
