Propane Fueled Heavy-Duty Vehicles
SAE Technical Paper Series, 1993<div class="htmlview paragraph">Propane is considered to be a viable fuel alternative for low-emission heavy-duty vehicles in Finland. Natural gas and propane have roughly the same potential for reduced exhaust emissions. Since natural gas and propane are both imported fuels in Finland, there is no preference between these two fuels.

Vehicle Mass Estimation for Heavy Duty Vehicle
SAE Technical Paper Series, 2015<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">Aiming at estimating the vehicle mass and the position of center of gravity, an on-line two-stage estimator, based on the recursive least square method, is proposed for buses in this paper.

Simulation of Heavy-Duty Vehicles in Platooning Scenarios
2018 21st International Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSC), 2018Connectivity and automation provide the potential to use information about the environment and future driving to minimize energy consumption. In order to achieve this goal, the designers of control strategies need to simulate a wide range of driving situations that can interact with other vehicles and the infrastructure to account for the specific ...

Compression braking control for heavy-duty vehicles
Proceedings of the 2000 American Control Conference. ACC (IEEE Cat. No.00CH36334), 2000Modern heavy-duty vehicles are equipped with a compression braking mechanism that augments their braking capability and reduces the wear of the conventional friction brakes. We consider a vehicle speed control problem using a continuously variable compression braking mechanism. The variability of the compression brake is achieved through the control of

Use of LNG in Heavy-Duty Vehicles
SAE Technical Paper Series, 1989<div class="htmlview paragraph">Natural gas in liquid form is 600 times denser than the vapour form, making liquid natural gas (LNG) an economical fuel to store and transport over long distances. This paper compares the onboard storage characteristics of compressed natural gas (CNG) and LNG and concludes that for heavy-duty vehicles LNG is the ...

Heavy-Duty Vehicles and Engines
2016This chapter reviews the most important cycles used for the certification, and testing in general, of heavy-duty vehicles in the world. For trucks and buses, both chassis and engine-dynamometer cycles have been employed. The latter were initially steady-state but later evolved to a more realistic transient form.

A Hydrogen Engine For Heavy Duty Vehicles
SAE Technical Paper Series, 1984The usage of hydrogen in road vehicle engines is unlikely to be introduced on a large scale before the 21st century. This is partly due to the fact that the on-board hydrogen storage is technically still not satisfactorily solved. Also on a cost basis the use of hydrogen is currently not competitive with the application of fossil based fuels and the ...

Endurance Testing of Heavy Duty Vehicles
SAE Technical Paper Series, 1982<div class="htmlview paragraph">Endurance tests are conducted on heavy duty vehicles to assure maintenance of structural integrity and acceptable levels of performance over the projected service life in the vocation for which the vehicles are intended.</div> <div class="htmlview paragraph">This paper reviews current practice in ...

Sensors for Heavy Duty Engines and Vehicles
SAE Technical Paper Series, 1987<div class="htmlview paragraph">THE USE OF MICROCOMPUTER CONTROLS, monitors and displays is now common in passenger cars and heavy agricultural equipment, and a great deal of effort is in process to develop similar systems for line-haul trucks and other applications of heavy-duty diesel engines.

Disc Brakes For Heavy Duty Vehicles
SAE Technical Paper Series, 1972<div class="htmlview paragraph">Disc Brakes offer substantial improvements, in most cases, in performance when compared to drum brakes. Coupled with longer life, less and simplified maintenance, they should offer a most attractive brake system to truck owners and operators.
