Value-at-Risk Estimation and the Port Mean-of-Order-P Methodology

open access: yesRevstat Statistical Journal, 2017
In finance, insurance and statistical quality control, among many other areas of appli[1]cation, a typical requirement is to estimate the value-at-risk (VaR) at a small level q, i.e. a high quantile of probability 1 −q, a value, high enough, so that the

White Matter Hyperintensity Burden and Short‐Interval Change Associated With Sleep Apnoea in the UK Biobank

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background and Purpose White matter hyperintensities (WMH) are a core neuroimaging marker of cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD). Sleep apnoea (SA) is a recognized vascular risk factor, but its associations with regional WMH burden, short‐interval WMH change and cognitive performance in population‐based cohorts remain incompletely defined. We

On the Impossibility of Learning the Missing Mass

open access: yesEntropy, 2019
This paper shows that one cannot learn the probability of rare events without imposing further structural assumptions. The event of interest is that of obtaining an outcome outside the coverage of an i.i.d. sample from a discrete distribution.

Memory and Resting‐State Connectivity in Acute Transient Global Amnesia: A Case–Control fMRI Study

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background and Objectives Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a striking model of isolated amnesia. While hippocampal lesions are well described, the network‐level mechanisms and the precise neuropsychological profile remain debated. Our objective was thus to characterize functional and neuropsychological correlates of acute TGA and their ...

The Fundamentals of Heavy-tails: Properties, Emergence, and Identification [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Heavy-tails are a continual source of excitement and confusion across disciplines as they are repeatedly "discovered" in new contexts. This is especially true within computer systems, where heavy-tails seemingly pop up everywhere -- from degree ...

Unlocking Multi‐Valley Energy Pockets and Interface‐Induced Phonon Filtering in InSb Thermoelectrics by Reaction‐Driven Interface Engineering

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
InSb, a narrow‐bandgap semiconductor with high carrier mobility, is promising for thermoelectric energy conversion but suffers from high lattice thermal conductivity and strong bipolar conduction. Here, in situ interface engineering using Co2O3 nanoprecursors forms hierarchical CoSbx/In2O3/CoSb3 heterostructures that enhance phonon scattering and ...

Tail biting in pigs: is it possible to rear the heavy pig avoiding tail docking? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Tail biting in pigs has been identified as a behavioural problem for decades. It has serious consequences for animal welfare and for the income of the farmers The inability to prevent occurrence of this adverse behavior under commercial farm conditions ...

A test procedure for detecting super-heavy tails

open access: yes, 2009
The aim of this work is to develop a test to distinguish between heavy and super-heavy tailed probability distributions. These classes of distributions are relevant in areas such as telecommunications and insurance risk, among others.

Near‐Infrared Light‐Driven Zn/Au Janus Micromotors for Multiplex SERS Detection of Anticancer Drugs

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Zn/Au Janus micromotors, propelled by thermophoretic effects under NIR light, function as active SERS platforms for single and multiplex detection of anticancer drugs. Their dynamic motion enhances analyte exchange at the Au interface, reducing saturation and competitive adsorption, thereby improving sensitivity and extending the linear detection range.

Heavy tails and electricity prices [PDF]

open access: yes
In the first years after the emergence of deregulated power markets it became apparent that for the valuation of electricity derivatives we cannot simply rely on models developed for financial or other commodity markets.
