Magnetic Reconnection in the Space Sciences: Past, Present, and Future

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, Volume 125, Issue 2, February 2020., 2020
Abstract Magnetic reconnection converts, often explosively, stored magnetic energy to particle energy in space and in the laboratory. Through processes operating on length scales that are tiny, it facilitates energy conversion over dimensions of, in some cases, hundreds of Earth radii.

Absolute and convective instabilities in an inviscid compressible mixing layer [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
We consider the stability of a compressible shear flow separating two streams of different speeds and temperatures. The velocity and temperature profiles in this mixing layer are hyperbolic tangents.

Instability of the Heliopause

open access: yesJournal of Physics: Conference Series, 2015
The heliopause (HP) separates the tenuous hot heliosheath plasma from the relatively dense cool magnetized plasma of the local interstellar medium (LISM). Fluid acceleration in the HP region can therefore drive Rayleigh-Taylor-like and Kelvin-Helmholtz- like instabilities.

ON THE ROTATION OF THE MAGNETIC FIELD ACROSS THE HELIOPAUSE [PDF]

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2013
There was an expectation that the magnetic field direction would rotate dramatically across the heliopause (HP). This rotation was used as one of the criteria to determine if Voyager 1 (V1) had crossed the HP. Recently the Voyager team concluded that V1 crossed into interstellar space last year (Gurnett et al. 2013).

Pickup Ion–Mediated Magnetic Reconnection in the Outer Heliosphere

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal Letters, 2023
Pickup ions (PUIs) play a crucial role in the heliosphere, contributing to the mediation of large-scale structures such as the distant solar wind, the heliospheric termination shock, and the heliopause.

An Anomalous Cosmic-Ray Mediated Termination Shock: Implications for Energetic Neutral Atoms

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal Letters, 2023
The Voyager 2 crossing of the termination shock indicated that most of the upstream energy from the thermal solar wind ions was transferred to pickup ions (PUIs) and other energetic particles downstream of the shock.

Stability of an MHD shear flow with a piecewise linear velocity profile [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
In this paper we present the results of the stability analysis of a simple shear flow of an incompressible fluid with a piecewise linear velocity profile in the presence of a magnetic field.

Voyager Observations of Electron Densities in the Very Local Interstellar Medium

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2023
The two Voyager spacecraft have now been immersed in the very local interstellar medium for several years. Both spacecraft carry a plasma wave instrument capable of detecting plasma waves that yield electron density through the determination of the ...

The Orientation of the Local Interstellar Magnetic Field

open access: yes, 2007
The orientation of the local interstellar magnetic field introduces asymmetries in the heliosphere that affect the location of heliospheric radio emissions and the streaming direction of ions from the termination shock of the solar wind.

Dust in the Local Interstellar Wind [PDF]

open access: yes, 1999
The gas-to-dust mass ratios found for interstellar dust within the Solar System, versus values determined astronomically for the cloud around the Solar System, suggest that large and small interstellar grains have separate histories, and that large ...
