Low-Cost Materials for Heliostats

open access: yesSolarPACES Conference Proceedings
Four heliostat concepts with extensive use of timber, concrete, or polymers were developed. For cost comparison, a 2 m² benchmark heliostat was designed and built with only moderate or no use of these materials.

Parametric Study and Optimization of No-Blocking Heliostat Field Layout

open access: yesEnergies, 2023
Generating electric power using solar thermal systems is effective, particularly for countries with high solar potential. In order to decide on a relevant location to implement the solar tower plant and develop the mathematical model of a no-blocking ...

The FLAP Heliostat

open access: yesSolarPACES Conference Proceedings, 2023
Heliostats represent a major cost share of concentrating solar power (CSP) plants with central receiver. They are essential for system efficiency and strongly influence maintenance cost and service life. Since CSP facilities require direct solar radiation, suitable installation sites can eminently be found in desert regions.

Machine Learning‐Based Estimation of Reference Evapotranspiration and Crop Coefficients for Wheat Under Diverse Climatic Conditions

open access: yesIrrigation and Drainage, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Accurate estimation of reference evapotranspiration (ET0) and crop coefficients (Kc) is critical for irrigation planning, particularly in data‐limited regions where agriculture dominates freshwater consumption. Although machine learning (ML) methods have been widely applied to ET0 and Kc estimation, most studies address these parameters ...

Concentrated Solar Combined With Hydrothermal Treatment to Unlock Lignin Graphitization Mechanisms

open access: yesGlobal Challenges, Volume 10, Issue 7, July 2026.
Advanced carbon materials such as graphitic biocarbons are successfully obtained from kraft lignin. A sustainable production route is highlighted using a combination of hydrothermal carbonization and solar carbonization, leading to the production of long and well‐stacked graphene layers in the biocarbon.

AUTOMATED HIGH RESOLUTION MEASUREMENT OF HELIOSTAT SLOPE ERRORS [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
A new optical measurement method that simplifies and optimizes the mounting and canting of heliostats and helps to assure their optical quality before commissioning of the solar field was developed.

Dimensioning of Heliostat Components under Wind and Gravity Load: the Map Approach [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Estimating annual optical performance of heliostats under realistic load is computationally very expensive as complex structural deformation and ray tracing calculations are necessary. An approach is presented that vastly accelerates these calculations

Heliostat Innovation in Detail to Reach Challenging Cost Target [PDF]

open access: yes, 2022
To be able to achieve the challenging cost targets for heliostat fields, several innovations in detail for a carousel type heliostat were developed. The resulting cost reduction and local content are estimated.
