Field Demonstration of an Automated Heliostat Tracking Correction Method

open access: yesEnergy Procedia, 2014
AbstractThis study provides a demonstration of an eight-parameter heliostat tracking-error correction method applied to heliostats at the National Solar Thermal Test Facility at Sandia National Laboratories. This method models the non-random physical error sources that arise from imperfect mount fabrication and installation processes.

Solar concentrator of segmented heliostat and a Fresnel lens for sun tracking applications [PDF]

open access: yesAIP Conference Proceedings, 2020
Concentrating solar power systems (CSP) are used on applications that require high temperatures and are often paired to a tracking system capable to align the position of the concentrating surface according to that of the sun. In order to achieve this, movable structures capable of supporting the optical surface while resisting wind loads are required,

Orbiting Carbon Observatory‐3: Preflight Spectral Calibration and Performance Evaluation

open access: yesEarth and Space Science, Volume 13, Issue 3, March 2026.
Abstract The Orbiting Carbon Observatory‐3 (OCO‐3) payload was installed on the International Space Station (ISS) in May 2019. OCO‐3 is providing measurements to quantify the column average carbon dioxide dry air mole fraction (XCO2) near the ISS ground track.

Prediction of Solar Concentration Flux Distribution for a Heliostat Based on Lunar Concentration Image and Generative Adversarial Networks

open access: yesApplied Artificial Intelligence
The predictive analysis of solar flux distribution on the receiver surface is critical in optimizing the concentration processes of concentrating solar power (CSP) plants.

Development of an Elevation–Fresnel Linked Mini-Heliostat Array

open access: yesEnergies, 2020
Heliostats are critical components of solar tower technology and different strategies have been proposed to reduce their costs; among them diminishing their size to reduce wind loads or linking nearby heliostats mechanically, to reduce the overall number

Cost Analysis and Optimization of Green Hydrogen Production via Concentrating Solar Technologies and PEM Electrolyzer

open access: yesInternational Journal of Energy Research, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
The burgeoning demand for power across the globe and the disastrous effect of climate change that results from power generation through depleting unclean fuel sources have necessitated the use of renewable and clean fuels. Hydrogen is a good alternative but only when produced from low‐carbon energy resources.

Model based Open-loop Correction of Heliostat Tracking Errors

open access: yesEnergy Procedia, 2014
AbstractThe heliostat field is by far the most expensive part of a typical Central Receiver (CR) plant. To achieve high conversion efficiencies, heliostats with very high tracking accuracy are needed, but errors are introduced due to manufacturing-, installation- and alignment tolerances as well control system granularity. Mechanical error profiles are

Design and Validation of a Passive Solar Tracking Sensor Based on Gnomon Shadow Analysis

open access: yesInternational Journal of Photoenergy, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
Solar tracking is essential for efficiency, yet current market solutions present a trade‐off: Active systems are precise but expensive and computationally demanding, while low‐cost passive systems (e.g., LDRs) often lack accuracy. To address this gap, this work presents the design and validation of a passive solar tracking sensor based on gnomon shadow

Development of a DSP Microcontroller-Based Fuzzy Logic Controller for Heliostat Orientation Control

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2020
This paper describes the design and implementation of a heliostat orientation control system based on a low-cost microcontroller. The proposed system uses a fuzzy logic controller (FLC) with the Center of Sums defuzzification method embedded on a ...

Very high-energy γ-ray observations of the Crab nebula and other potential sources with the GRAAL experiment [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
The “γ-ray astronomy at Almeria” (GRAAL) experiment uses 63 heliostat-mirrors with a total mirror area of ≈2500 m2 from the CESA-1 field at the “Plataforma Solar de Almeria” to collect Cherenkov light from air showers.
