Helium-oxygen ("heliox") mixtures have been used for decades in the treatment of various respiratory problems ranging from acute upper airway obstructions to lower airway derangements, such as asthma and exacerbations of chronic bronchitis. This review presents a brief history of helium and helium-oxygen mixtures and their potential clinical uses ...

Croup, a common acute clinical syndrome in children up to the age of six, is thought to be triggered by a viral infection, and is characterised by a varying degree of respiratory distress due to upper airway inflammation and oedema of the subglottic mucosa.

Heliox Use in the Treatment of Acute Hyperammonemia
Journal Of Child Neurology, 2001The objective of this study was to evaluate a new method for the treatment of acute hyperammonemia with a helium-oxygen mixture (heliox). We conducted a prospective, randomized, controlled study of male Sprague-Dawley rats. Experimental hyperammonemia was induced by 7 days of a high-ammonia diet.

More About Heliox and Bronchiolitis
Pediatrics, 2002To the Editor .— The study by Martinon-Torres et al1 using heliox therapy in infants with acute bronchiolitis makes me question the diagnosis of “bronchiolitis” in those infants. It appears from the study that the use of heliox helped to decrease the work of breathing in these infants. It is conceivable that this was achieved by its property of having

A Prototype Infant Incubator for Heliox Therapy
Biomedical Instrumentation & Technology, 2006Abstract Heliox (Hx) gas has been shown to improve pulmonary function in infants, but methods for its delivery are invasive and problematic. To this end, we modified an Isolette (Hill-Rom Air-Shields) infant incubator (Hxl) to deliver Hx respiratory gas mixtures noninvasively while providing thermal stability for neonatal care in the ...

Heliox in children with airway obstruction
Pediatric Emergency Care, 1997Although helium offers an additional tool in the treatment of various airway and pulmonary problems, it has no inherent therapeutic effects. As such, it can be used only as a temporizing agent to allow time for therapeutic agents to work or for the natural resolution of the disease process.

Heliox Therapy in Infants With Acute Bronchiolitis
Pediatrics, 2002Objective. To assess the therapeutic effects of breathing a low-density gas mixture (heliox: 70% helium and 30% oxygen) in infants with bronchiolitis. Design. Prospective, interventional, comparative study. Setting. A pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) in a tertiary care, teaching hospital.

Heliox Therapy in Acute Severe Asthma
Chest, 1995To assess how patients with respiratory acidosis from acute severe asthma respond to helium-oxygen (heliox) mixtures.Consecutive case series.Urban community teaching hospital.Over a 2-year period, 12 asthmatics (mean age, 33.8 +/- 11.3 years) presented to the emergency department with acute respiratory acidosis (pH < 7.35 and PaCO2 > or = 45 mm Hg ...

The Role of Heliox in Paediatric Respiratory Disease
Paediatric Respiratory Reviews, 2010Helium-oxygen (heliox) gas mixtures have been studied for over 70 years as an adjunctive therapy for airway obstruction in a variety of respiratory diseases. The medical use of heliox is based on the physical properties of helium as its low density makes it advantageous in promoting more efficient flow through narrowed passages.
