To helmet or not to helmet: a global perspective on the bicycle compulsory protective helmet law
Minerva Pediatrics, 2021Child injury from bike accidents is a significant component of morbidity, mortality and health expenditure in many countries. Universal use of bicycle helmets by children could prevent between 135 and 155 deaths, and between 39,000 and 45,000 head injuries annually. Surprisingly, epidemiologic data indicate a worldwide low prevalence of helmet use.

The Biomechanics of Helmets and Helmet Removal
The Journal of Trauma: Injury, Infection, and Critical Care, 1985To better understand motion in the cervical spine related to helmet wearing and removal, normal volunteers underwent videotaped fluoroscopy during helmet removal and lateral spine X-rays in various positions. There was a tendency towards increased flexion in the supine position in the helmeted volunteers which disappeared with minimal traction.

2017Riding a motorcycle without a helmet can cause serious injury. Although a crackdown on traffic violations is a good way to stop this unsafe practice, it is not realistic to manually find and arrest riders who do not wear helmets where there are numerous motorcycle riders, as in Vietnam.
