The first record of the genus Helobdella (Hirudinoidea: Glossiphoniidae) from Australia, with a description of a new species, Helobdella papillornata

The first species of the genus Helobdella in Australia is recorded from Victoria. Helobdella papillornata has all of the diagnostic features of the genus including: triannulate segments, one pair of eyes on somite II, diffuse salivary glands, five crop caeca, one annulus between the gonopores and one annulus between the anus and the caudal sucker.

ABSTRACT The segmented ectoderm and mesoderm of the leech arise via a stereotyped cell lineage from embryonic stem cells called teloblasts. Each teloblast gives rise to a column of primary blast cell daughters, and the blast cells generate descendant clones that serve as the segmental repeats of their particular teloblast lineage.

Expression of actin mRNA in embryos of the leech Helobdella triserialis

A cDNA clone (Htr-actin) containing a 1.48 kb insert corresponding to actin was isolated from a stage 10-11 Helobdella triserialis cDNA library by cross hybidization to a Drosophila melanogaster actin clone. The cDNA is equivalent in size to the adult actin mRNA detected by Northern analysis.

One advantage of using Helobdella (leech) embryos as an experimental system is their amenability for microinjection. Blastomeres ranging in size from the zygote (400 microm diameter) down to micromeres and primary blast cells (approximately 20 microm diameter) can be injected by pressure under a dissecting microscope.
