Predicting private and public helping behaviour by implicit attitudes and the motivation to control prejudiced reactions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
The role of individual differences in implicit attitudes toward homosexuals and motivation to control prejudiced reactions (MCPR) in predicting private and public helping behaviour was investigated.

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Individual variation in helping in a cooperative breeder: relatedness versus behavioural type

open access: yes, 2011
Helpers in cooperatively breeding groups can vary hugely in the variety and level of care they provide. Several studies suggest that kin selection alone cannot be invoked to explain variation in helping for many species, but there have been few explicit ...

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

Individual and situational determinants of altruism and helping behaviour [PDF]

open access: yes, 1978
Studies which have attempted to assess the relative contributions of individual and situational determinants of helping behaviour and altruism have yielded diverse and contradictory data.

Preference for local food as a matter of helping behaviour: Insights from Norway [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Consumption of local food is a fast-growing trend supported by local food advocates and governments. This trend has also captured the interest of researchers.

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Not so selfish after all: depletion, vitality, and helping behaviour

open access: yes, 2017
Helping strangers may diverge from the natural inclinations of individuals. Therefore, if individuals cannot mobilise the effort that is needed to override their natural inclinations they are disinclined to assist a stranger.
