Hepatitis A virus hemagglutination and a test for hemagglutination inhibition antibodies
Journal of Clinical Microbiology, 1989Like enteroviruses, hepatitis A virus (HAV) hemagglutinated various species of erythrocytes under similar conditions. HAV-specific antibodies in both acute- and convalescent-phase sera were found to inhibit hemagglutination. The HAV hemagglutination inhibition test can be used for diagnosis, epidemiological surveillance, and vaccine assessment.

Rubella-Virus Hemagglutination-Inhibition Test
New England Journal of Medicine, 1967THE isolation of rubella virus1 , 2 in 1961 opened a period of remarkable progress in studies of the virus,3 the disease4 and, recently, experimental vaccines for preventing the disease.5 , 6 Comparable progress has not been made in the development of simple, rapid serodiagnostic methods.

Various concentrations of pig, guinea pig, chicken, and turkey erythrocytes (RBCs) were cryopreserved and compared with fresh RBCs in hemagglutination and hemagglutination inhibition tests. Hemagglutination and hemagglutination inhibition titers obtained with cryopreserved or fresh RBCs from the same donor differed by not more than one twofold dilution.
