Several viruses agglutinate erythrocytes of various animal species. The components responsible for this phenomenon have been termed hemagglutinins (HA), which in many cases have been identified as glycoproteins present in virus envelopes. The HA titers have often been used as convenient indicators of the amounts of viruses.

Characterization of the Hemagglutinin of Staphylococcus epidermidis
Journal of Infectious Diseases, 1995Adherence to biomaterials and production of biofilm is thought to be pivotal in the pathogenesis of prosthetic device infection by Staphylococcus epidermidis. In this study a strong association (P < .001) of hemagglutination with adherence and biofilm production was observed.

Synthesis of Hemagglutinin-Binding Trisaccharides
2011Influenza or the flu, caused by RNA influenza viruses, is an infectious disease that affects birds and mammals, including millions of people each year. It causes severe respiratory illness and is sometimes fatal, especially to the elderly and children.

Characteristics of hemagglutinins of some picodnaviruses
Archiv fr die gesamte Virusforschung, 1971Attempts to characterize some chemical properties of the picodnaviruses RV, H-l and X 14 hemagglutinins are performed using several enzymes and reagents. The results indicate the proteinaceous nature of the viral receptors since no lipidic or glycidic moiety could be shown. Although the viral receptors proved to be resistant to proteolytic enzymes such

Hemagglutinins among Higher Fungi
The Journal of Immunology, 1953Summary Examination of saline extracts of 70 species of fleshy fungi, chiefly Basidiomycetes, revealed the presence of hemagglutinins in 15 and hemolysins in 6 species. The agglutinins were nonspecific in that they did not permit differentiation of the ABO blood groups.

Structure of the measles virus hemagglutinin
Nature Structural & Molecular Biology, 2007Measles virus is a highly pathogenic virus that infects roughly 20 million people per year. We report here the crystal structure of the measles virus hemagglutinin, the surface glycoprotein responsible for the binding of measles virus to its host cell receptors.

Hemagglutinins in Extracts of Israeli Plants
The Journal of Immunology, 1957Summary The nature of the protein responsible for the hemagglutinating activity of Datura metel extract has been investigated. Ammonium sulfate precipitation and paper electrophoresis indicate that the active protein is a globulin similar to human γ-globulin.

Effects of X Rays on Hemagglutinins
Journal of Infectious Diseases, 1959Ionizing radiations may offer a practical means for producing beneficial changes in biological materials and a wide range of potentialities exist in their application for the sterilization of whole blood plasma or its specific protein components. However, where blood serum is to be retained for its antibody content, it is important that its immune ...

THE CARBOHYDRATES OF THE HEMAGGLUTININ OF INFLUENZA VIRUS
1984The carbohydrate side chains of the influenza virus hemagglutinin are attached by N-glycosidic linkages to the polypeptide. Complex (type I), mannose-rich (type II), and hybrid side chains are present and each of these types exhibits a considerable amount of heterogeneity.

Presence of hemagglutinin in the vaccinia virion
Archiv fr die gesamte Virusforschung, 1971Purified vaccinia virus freed from demonstrable hemagglutinating activity was inactivated and, subsequently, disintegrated by treatment with pepsin. The preparations obtained were examined in the electron microscope and tested for hemagglutinating and precipitating activity as well as for their immunogenicity.
