A new characid species with remarkable sexual dimorphism (Characiformes: Characidae: Stevardiinae) from the upper Guayabero River, Orinoco basin, Colombia

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, Volume 104, Issue 6, Page 1947-1959, June 2024.
Abstract A new species of characid with remarkable sexual characteristics is described from the upper Guayabero River drainage from the Orinoco basin in Colombia. The new species is included in the genus Monotocheirodon by sharing most of the previously proposed diagnostic features of this genus.

Sensing in the dark: Constructive evolution of the lateral line system in blind populations of Astyanax mexicanus

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 14, Issue 4, April 2024.
Previous studies predominantly investigated eye regression in cavefish evolution, but less is known about constructive evolution of non‐visual sensory systems in subterranean species. This review highlights our state of knowledge on mechanosensory lateral line expansions in Astyanax mexicanus, emphasizing anatomical features, synaptic plasticity, and ...

Meta‐analysis contrasting freshwater biodiversity in forests and oil palm plantations with and without riparian buffers

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 38, Issue 1, February 2024.
Abstract The expansion of oil palm plantations has led to land‐use change and deforestation in the tropics, which has affected biodiversity. Although the impacts of the crop on terrestrial biodiversity have been extensively reviewed, its effects on freshwater biodiversity remain relatively unexplored.

Assessing fish diversity in abandoned mining ponds in Madre de Dios, Peru, using environmental DNA

open access: yesEnvironmental DNA, Volume 6, Issue 1, January–February 2024.
We surveyed four lentic systems in Madre de Dios, Peru: two abandoned mining ponds created by ASGM and two unmined oxbow lakes as a reference to assess fish recolonization. We compared two alternative eDNA processing methods and contrasted our results with historic data from traditional biodiversity monitoring. Our results indicate that eDNA could be a
