HEMIPARASITIC NUTRITION IN ANGIOSPERMS [PDF]

open access: yesNew Phytologist, 1968
SummaryThe structure of the root haustorium and the hairs of the shoot of Odontites has been examined by light microscopy. The haustorium provides a direct xylem‐xylem link between root of host and hemiparasite. Tracer studies show that solutes move across this pathway from the host to the shoot of the hemiparasite.Three types of hair clothe the shoot.

HEMIPARASITIC NUTRITION IN ANGIOSPERMS [PDF]

open access: yesNew Phytologist, 1967
SummaryPlants of the hemiparasite Odontites verna (red bartsia) benefited markedly through association with barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) or white clover (Trifolium repens L.). Benefit commenced after the establishment of haustorial connections on the roots of a host.Compounds containing labelled carbon moved through haustoria into the hemiparasite ...

Transit From Autotrophism to Heterotrophism: Sequence Variation and Evolution of Chloroplast Genomes in Orobanchaceae Species

open access: yesFrontiers in Genetics, 2020
The family Orobanchaceae including autotrophic, hemiparasitic, and holoparasitic species, is becoming a key taxa to study the evolution of chloroplast genomes in different lifestyles. But the early evolutionary trajectory in the transit from autotrophism

Cronartium rust sporulation on hemiparasitic plants [PDF]

open access: yesPlant Pathology, 2014
Susceptibility of potential alternate host plants to pine stem rusts belonging to Cronartium spp. was artificially tested in Finland during 2012–2013. Forty‐three species representing 11 plant families were inoculated in the laboratory; 34 species (11 families) were inoculated in the ...

Candidate vectors of horizontal transfer of BovB retrotransposon [PDF]

open access: yesBIO Web of Conferences, 2022
The horizontal transfer of retrotransposons has a significant impact on the regulatory system of a multicellular organism, but the biological basis of horizontal transfer has been sufficiently studied up to date.

Water-stress physiology of Rhinanthus alectorolophus, a root-hemiparasitic plant. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2018
Root-hemiparasitic plants of the genus Rhinanthus acquire resources through a water-wasting physiological strategy based on high transpiration rate mediated by the accumulation of osmotically active compounds and constantly open stomata.

Parasitic plants in Europe: ecological niches and spatial patterns. [PDF]

open access: yesPlant Biol (Stuttg)
Parasitic plants inhabit a wide range of ecosystems worldwide, where they may have critical roles as “ecosystem engineers”. We examined the ecology of parasitic plants in Europe.

Role of Ethylene in the Germination of the Hemiparasite Striga hermonthica [PDF]

open access: yesPlant Physiology, 1991
Seed germination of the hemiparasitic angiosperm Striga hermonthica (Del.) Benth is elicited by compounds present in the root exudates of the host plant. Although a variety of compounds can substitute for the host-derived signal, the mechanism through which these act is unknown.

Flora of the State of Paraíba, Brazil: Loranthaceae Juss.

open access: yesActa Scientiarum: Biological Sciences, 2015
The family Loranthaceae Juss., characterized by its parasitic habit, is rarely studied in Brazil. Current research provides a taxonomic survey of Loranthaceae in the State of Paraiba, northeastern Brazil, in which ten species belonging to four genera ...

Prehaustoria of root hemiparasites Rhinanthus minor and Odontites vernus (Orobanchaceae) produce lignin-rich interfacial deposits closely resembling those of attached haustoria. [PDF]

open access: yesAnn Bot
Background and Aims Lignin and other phenolics are commonly observed at the interfaces between the haustoria of parasitic plants and tissues of their hosts.
