Jet formation from bubbles near a solid boundary in a compressible liquid. Numerical study of distance dependence

open access: yes, 2020
A small, spherical bubble of high internal pressure is inserted into water at constant ambient pressure as a model of a laser-induced bubble. Its subsequent dynamics near a flat solid boundary is studied in dependence on the distance of the bubble to the

Assessing the Mechanism of NH3 Sensing in Flexible Carbon‐Nanotube‐Based Chemoresistive Sensors via In Situ Photoemission Spectroscopy

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
Flexible carbon nanotube chemoresistors detect NH3 through charge‐transfer interactions directly revealed by in situ synchrotron X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Binding‐energy shifts of ≈1 eV correlate with resistance changes, demonstrating that intra‐CNT charge transfer between NH3 and CNTs is the dominant sensing mechanism.

Mortality and crown conditions on Quercus robur L. permanent plots - a 20-year overview [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Pedunculate oak (Quercus robur L.) forests in Slovenia are experiencing widespread mortality. Changes in lowlands are reflected in decline of complete forest complexes, high mortality, uneven stand structure and associated forest regeneration problems ...

Estimating leaf area index in different types of mature forest stands in Switzerland: a comparison of methods [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Leaf area index (LAI) was estimated at 15 sites in the Swiss Long-Term Forest Ecosystem Research Programme (LWF) in 2004-2005 using two indirect techniques: the LAI-2000 plant canopy analyzer (Licor Inc.) and digital hemispherical photography, applying ...

Multi-contrast imaging and digital refocusing on a mobile microscope with a domed LED array [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
We demonstrate the design and application of an add-on device for improving the diagnostic and research capabilities of CellScope--a low-cost, smartphone-based point-of-care microscope.

Tracking forest biophysical properties with automated digital repeat photography: A fisheye perspective using digital hemispherical photography from below the canopy

open access: yesAgricultural and Forest Meteorology, 2020
Abstract In recent years, digital repeat photography has received increasing attention as an inexpensive means by which seasonal changes in vegetation canopies can be monitored. Offering automation and an increased measurement frequency, colour indices derived from above-canopy digital repeat photography have proven a popular alternative to ...

Cr2AlC: A High‐Temperature Transparent Conducting Ceramic

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
The high‐quality epitaxial Cr2AlC(0001) layer combines a low resistivity of 42.5 µΩcm, 84% optical transmittance at 900 nm, and thermal stability up to 800–1100°C. It stands out as an excellent high‐temperature transparent conductor with a negligible resistivity size effect, exceptional scaling (ρoλ < 3 × 10−16 Ωm2), and a figure of merit of 0.004 Ω−1.

BLOC: Buildable and Linkable Organ on a Chip

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
We developed a “Buildable and Linkable Organ on a Chip” (BLOC) that can construct diverse microphysiological systems (MPSs). The BLOC is standardized to the same size and has one of the functions of “Culture,” “Control,” or “Analysis.” Users can freely configure various MPSs, including developing perfusion, cytotoxicity analysis, and biochemical ...

Condition and zonation of mangrove ecosystems in the small islands around the area crossed by the equatorial line of North Maluku Province

open access: yesDepik Jurnal
The South Halmahera Islands feature a comprehensive marine coastal ecology. The ecosystems found were seagrass, mangrove and coral reef ecosystems.
