Glycosylated Hemoglobins: Increased Glycosylation of Hemoglobin A in Diabetic Patients

Diabetes, 1979
The components of the hemoglobin-A1 fraction —hemoglobins A1a-c—arise from nonenzymatic glycosylation of hemoglobin A at the β-chain N-terminal amino groups and can be resolved from hemoglobin A by cation exchange chromatography. Glycosylation can also occur at the α-chain N-terminals as well as the E-amino groups of lysine residues of both α- and β ...

The organization of hemoglobin in erythrocytes containing hemoglobin A or hemoglobin C.

Canadian Journal of Physiology and Pharmacology, 1970
Red cells containing hemoglobin C have been shown to behave as if they are more rigid than normal cells that contain hemoglobin A. Under some conditions the former cells contain inclusions that appear to be crystalline. This study shows, by X-ray scattering and diffraction, that the inclusions are crystalline.
