Pediatric Hemovigilance and Adverse Transfusion Reactions
Clinics in Laboratory Medicine, 2021Some types of transfusion reactions occur more frequently in the pediatric than the adult population. Allergic reactions are the most common, followed by nonhemolytic transfusion reactions; male children seem most susceptible to such reactions. Platelets are often implicated and pulmonary reactions are understudied in children.

In Norway, 55 hospitals collect blood and there are 62 hospital associated laboratories that issue blood. All of the blood banks in Norway have performed universal leukodepletion of cellular blood components since 2001. Approximately 200,000 whole blood donations are performed per year and approximately 250,000 blood components are transfused.
